British Athletics Welcomes the World

09 December 2013

British Athletics has confirmed the selection policies for GB & NI junior teams during 2014. There will be three major international competition opportunities in 2014; the IAAF World Junior Championships, the Loughborough International and the Mannheim International.

To be considered for selection, athletes must be eligible to compete for GB & NI and be born in 1995, 1996 or 1997. The Trials for the IAAF World Junior Championships for all events except 5,000m, 10,000m and combined events will take place on 21-22 June 2014 in Bedford. The Trials for the 5,000m will be held on 31 May 2014 in Manchester, the 10,000m on 10 May at Highgate in London and combined events on 24-25 May in Bedford.

British Athletics’ long term development model aimed at medals at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games suggests that the focus for youth athletes in 2014 should be on the IAAF World Junior Championships. As a result British Athletics will not be sending a team to the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

Older athletes within the youth age group will be eligible for selection for the World Junior Championships and as such will not miss out on potential GB & NI representation.
