Weir to star at IPC Grand Final

2 May 2013

Some of the biggest names from the world of Paralympic athletics will star at the Sainsbury’s Grand Prix – Birmingham, in the IPC Grand Prix Final on 29 June at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.

Nearly a year after being cheered on by 80,000 fans at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, some of last summer’s heroes will line up on the track and field for the final of seven events staged around the world this year as part of the inaugural IPC Athletics Series.

The series was launched to give athletes greater opportunities to compete against the world’s best whilst developing a framework of excellence in competition management.

After events staged in Dubai, Beijing, Sao Paulo, Grosseto, Arizona and Berlin, athletes who have met the qualifying criteria will make their way to the West Midlands for what will be a fitting finale.

Six-time Paralympic gold medallist David Weir will be one of the headline names after confirming last week that he would be taking part in the event, and the 34 year old, who won an impressive four gold medals at London 2012 will join over 140 athletes competing across 18 events in Birmingham.

“The British public are so supportive of the Paralympic movement and it’s brilliant for the sport that we have another high profile event back in Britain so soon after the Games. I’m really looking forward to racing at the Sainsbury’s Grand Prix - Birmingham. It’s not a track I know well but the British crowd are always very vocal in their support, so I’m sure that will give me the boost I need.”

Tickets for the IPC Grand Final are now on sale, and can be purchased here
