2015 Indoor British Champs Launch Peter Elliot Bransberg
6 November 2014

Yorkshire athletics legend Peter Elliott is predicting a top class weekend of competition at the Sainsbury’s Indoor British Championships in Sheffield on 14 and 15 February 2015.

British athletes have had an excellent 2014 with outstanding results at both the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the European Championships in Zurich.

Exciting, young new UK stars such as Dina Asher-Smith (coach: John Blackie), William Sharman (Jerzy Maciukiewicz) and Andy Vernon (Nic Bideau) all achieved medal success outdoors on the back of winning at the Sainsbury’s  British Championships in the summer. Katarina Johnson-Thompson (Mike Holmes) won British Indoor high jump and long jump titles, before securing a world indoor long jump silver medal, and is currently ranked world number one in the heptathlon.

Many of these athletes will compete indoors at Sheffield’s English Institute of Sport in February, hoping for national glory and the chance to qualify for the European Indoor Championships in Prague in March.

Elliott said “It’s an exciting time for athletics in Britain and there’s a lot of young talent that has emerged this year. I think the Sainsbury’s Indoor British Championships in Sheffield will reflect this and provide a great competition and fantastic entertainment for the Yorkshire crowd.

“It was always important to me to compete and do well at the British Championships, and I think a national title is still one of the highlights of an athlete’s career.

“The event offers young athletes the chance to gain experience of top class competition, and we will hopefully see our new stars building on the successes of 2014 with some outstanding performances at the EIS.”

Jordan Bransberg, a talented young middle-distance runner from Leeds is one of the Yorkshire athletes who will compete at the event. The 19-year-old has already represented Great Britain in the 800m at the 2013 European Junior Championships and is ultimately aiming to follow in the footsteps of Olympic silver medallist, Elliott.

Bransberg said, “I’m really looking forward to the Sainsbury’s Indoor British Championships in Sheffield and I think it will be really competitive next year. Inspiring athletes like Peter used the British Championships to hone their race skills and establish themselves as the best in the country, and I’d like to do the same.

“I hope lots of people will come and support us in February at what I’m sure will be a brilliant meet.”

British Athletics’ Major Event Director Cherry Alexander said also added:

“The Sainsbury’s Indoor British Championships is a great opportunity for people to watch some of Britain’s best athletes and newest stars compete at the fantastic English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

“After an excellent 2014 season it will be very exciting to see how our athletes can continue to develop, and the British Indoor Championships will be a major step along that journey.”

Tara Hewitt, Head of Sponsorship at Sainsbury’s, also commented:

“The Sainsbury’s Indoor British Championships is a fantastic celebration of our home grown athletics talent and a great reminder of what can be achieved with determination and perseverance in sport.”
