Richard Whitehead
1 June 2017

The Swiss series continues at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Nottwil beginning on Friday 2 June until Monday 5 June, with Richard Whitehead (coach: Keith Antoine) and Stef Reid (Aston Moore) joining world record breaker Hannah Cockroft (Jenni Banks) and a fine group of British wheelchair racers at the popular meet.

Double Paralympic champion Whitehead has made a solid start to the season posting times of 12.41 and 23.16w in the 100m and 200m respectively at low-key meetings so far in 2017. However, a fast track in the Swiss town will be just what the three-time world champion will be wanting as he takes on the two distances, with the 200m kicking off proceedings on Friday, and the 100m on Saturday.

After winning the silver in the T44 long jump last summer, Reid goes into world championships year with prospects of winning gold in London. She lines up in the event this weekend alongside evenly-matched rival, Marlene Van Gansewinkel (NED) who won bronze last summer. Before her favoured long jump on Monday, she will race over 100m on Saturday.

Cockroft set a fabulous four world records in Arbon last weekend, and will be looking to complete the series in style. She begins a busy three days of competition with the 800m on Friday morning, alongside Carly Tait (Banks) who raced well at the Arbon meets.

European record holders Toby Gold (Banks) and Dan Bramall (Peter Wyman) will join Andrew Small in the T33 events across the weekend. Whilst Ben Rowlings (Job King) and Isaac Towers (Wyman) will again do battle in the T34 races – both have seen rapid improvements in their personal bests across the last week.

Richard Chiassaro (Banks) and Nathan Maguire (Ste Hoskins) take on a host of events ranging from 100m to 5000m in the T54 class, as Jade Jones (Ian Thompson / Tanni Grey-Thompson) goes in the 400m in the women’s equivalent. A Paralympic, world and European medallist, Mickey Bushell (Jenny Archer) is another to look out for in the T53 100m and 200m.
