Hannah Cockroft
24 May 2017

The world’s best wheelchair racers descend on Arbon in Switzerland for the Daniela Jutzeler Memorial tomorrow. This kicks off a series of events taking place in the country over the next fortnight with five-time Paralympic gold medallist Hannah Cockroft (coach: Jenni Banks) and the new T53 200m world record holder Sammi Kinghorn (Ian Mirfin) in action.

Cockroft has raced at two events so far this year, the BUCS championships and the British Wheelchair championships in Stoke Mandeville, and will be looking to continue her preparations for the highly anticipated World Para Athletics Championships in London in July. The Yorkshire-born athlete has a busy day in prospect as she races over 100m, 400m and 800m.

She will be joined by training partner Carly Tait (Jenni Banks), a double European silver medallist, who lines-up in the same three races.

Kinghorn has been in sensational form in recent weeks with her 200m world record the icing on the cake of a successful US series. Nevertheless, a week after her exploits in Arizona and Indianapolis, she will again take on strong competition in the guise of 2016 Paralympic medallists Angela Ballard (AUS), Chelsea McClammer (USA), Madison de Rozario (AUS) and Shirley Reilly (USA). The Scottish athlete will take on the T53 100m, 400m and 800m at this meeting – she lowered her European records in the 100m and 400m last week.

Paralympic T33 100m silver and bronze medallists, Toby Gold (Jenni Banks) and Andrew Small (Rick Hoskins) respectively, will both be in action in the Swiss town. The 100m will be a rematch of the final in Rio, as they line-up alongside the gold medallist, Kuwait’s Ahmad Almutairi. 2015 world silver medallist Dan Bramall (Peter Wyman) will also line-up in this contest.

2012 Paralympic gold medallist Mickey Bushell (Jenny Archer) takes on the T53 100m and 200m, whilst Jade Jones, who has been in great form on the roads and in para triathlon in recent months, returns to the track to contend the T54 800m, 1500m and 5000m.

Quadruple European medallist Richard Chiassaro (Jenni Banks) lines up in the T54 200m, 400m and 800m with tough competition in the form of Kenny Van Weeghal (NED) and Leo-Pekka Tahti (FIN). T34 European medallists Isaac Towers (Peter Wyman) and Ben Rowlings (Job King) are amongst a host of Britons competing at tomorrow’s event.
