Olympians Target Super 8

Super8

03 June 2009

Fifteen members of Team GB who represented the nation at last year’s Beijing Olympic Games have been confirmed in the starting line-ups for next week’s innovative Super8 competition at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium on Wednesday 10 June.

Sprinters Christian Malcolm (Cardiff) and Craig Pickering (London North), long jumpers Greg Rutherford (London North), Chris Tomlinson (London North), 400m/800m runner Jenny Meadows (Manchester), hurdler Tasha Danvers (London South) and heptathlete Kelly Sotherton (Guest/Birmingham) have had their participation already confirmed.

They will now be joined by sprinters Alex Nelson (Sheffield), Richard Buck (Sheffield), Robert Tobin (London South), Anyika Onuora (Manchester), Lee McConnell (Glasgow), Vicki Barr (Newcastle), middle distance runner Susan Scott (Glasgow) and high jumper Tom Parsons (Birmingham).

Meeting Director Shaun Pickering, who has been recruiting athletes for Super8, said: “British athletes have really embraced the concept of Super8 and by attracting quality athletes to compete against one another, we can be sure of some quality competition. That’s good for the athletes, good for the spectators and good for the sport.”

The exciting two-hour City versus City concept is being piloted in the Welsh capital where hosts Cardiff will be hoping to be inspired by a big home crowd as they take on all-star teams from London North, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, London South, Glasgow and Sheffield at the evening meeting which runs from 7-9pm.

Sky Sports have also confirmed they will broadcast the event. More big names will be announced in the coming days. Tickets are now on sale at £5 (seating) or £3 (standing) for adults, U16s are free, provided they are accompanied by a paying adult. Tickets can be purchased at www.uka.org.uk/super8 or by calling the ticket hotline on 0844 844 0808.
