UK Athletics wishes to give interested endurance athletes early warning that it has been invited to select a Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for a revamped Ekiden Road Relay in Chiba, Japan, on 23 November.

The organisers have changed the highly popular and extremely high-class event into one race for mixed teams of three men and three women. The men will run two 10km stages and one 5km stage while the women will run two 5km stages plus the 7.195km stage that completes the classic marathon distance.

The date of the race – on the eve of the UK Cross Challenge incorporating European Trials at Liverpool – will further concentrate the minds of athletes and selectors on priorities.

UKA Senior Coordinator for Endurance Spencer Barden said: “We will announce the selection policy in plenty of time for athletes to prepare. Our intention, as ever, will be to send the strongest available team although the European Cross Country Championships will again be our major focus of the winter season.”
