Sotherton in action at 2008 Birmingham GP
Birmingham’s sports fans can beat the credit crunch at next year’s showpiece athletics event in the city after UK Athletics announced a special ticket deal for the Aviva Grand Prix which takes place at the National Indoor Arena on Saturday 21 February.

Last season’s event proved a huge hit with the city's fans so given the current climate where we are all watching our pennies the special ticket deal, one that will offer a twenty percent discount on all tickets purchased for a limited period up until 21 Nov, is fantastic news to all sports fans in and around Birmingham.

Chief Executive of UK Athletics, Niels de Vos is looking forward to fantastic day of international athletics:

“The Aviva Grand Prix is always a personal favourite of mine – it’s in my home town for one. But I suspect we’re going to see an increased intensity of competition at this event for the next four years as the sport builds towards the London Olympics in 2012.

“Opportunities to compete on home soil in a major global athletics meeting will not come around too often between now and 2012, so I expect the athletes to grab this opportunity to show the British public what they can achieve.”

At this same event last year there was a strong performance from two of our Beijing Olympic heroes. Philips Idowuled from start to finish in the men’s triple jump. This proved to be fantastic preparation for Idowu before he claimed the World Indoor title in Valencia in March and silver in the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing.  Also, Christine Ohuruogu competed running a very strong 200m ahead of claiming her 400m gold in Beijing.

With an anticipated 8000 people expected to fill the NIA for the biggest international meeting on the indoor circuit, the Aviva Grand Prix will provide the perfect stage for the world’s greatest athletes to do battle.  The will also be an ideal warm-up ahead of the European Indoor Championships which take place a fortnight later.
