Jon Brown’s 10-month injury nightmare has ended with a victory in the Nanaimo City Half Marathon in Canada, where he is based.

The Sheffield AC athlete, who has crossed the lines of the last two Olympic marathons in frustrating fourth places, finished in 67:28, 21 seconds ahead of his nearest rival, over a tough course.

And it has persuaded him he is fit enough to plan a winter campaign of road races taking in the Great North Run and the Great South Run in a bid to get into the Chiba Ekiden Relay with the Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team, followed in early December by the Fukuoka Marathon.

Brown reports: “Yes, finally I have raced again! The course was very hilly with lots of tight corners, which made the time very slow. The field included some decent Canadian internationals though, so I felt that I pushed fairly well. “The pace was slow for the first 9km mainly due to being mostly uphill; around  this point I applied some pressure and pulled away. The race felt OK, but I was little tired from training going into the race and also I'm lacking competitive fitness. “But overall it was a good introduction  back into racing and I can only get quicker from now on.”
