Dave Weir

09 September 2011

Following the success of yesterday’s International Paralympic Day (IPD) celebrations held in Trafalgar Square, London - the first time IPD has ever been held outside of Germany - International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Sir Philip Craven formally invited the top disability athletes on the planet to compete in the London 2012 Paralympic Games, and tickets for the Games are now on sale so you can get in on all the action.

The Paralympic Games will see more than 4,000 athletes come to London to compete in 20 different sports over 11 days of competition with more than 500 medals up for grabs.

Ticket applications are open now (Friday 9 September) through to 6pm on 26 September 2011

Half of all the tickets are priced at £10 or less and 75% are £20 or less. For young people aged 16 and under (at 29 August 2012) and seniors aged 60 and over (at 29 August 2012), special price tickets are available in every sport session for just £5. There are also day passes available which give you the chance to see a variety of sports in one day (conditions apply).

Wheelchair spaces and companion seats will be available in all price categories for every sport session, as well as seats for people with other accessibility requirements.

"In 356 days time the Paralympic Games will head back to its spiritual home," IPC President Craven told the Trafalgar Square crowd at IPD. "Something that Dr Ludwig Guttmann started in 1948 on a patch of grass at the back of Stoke Mandeville Hospital will return as one of the world's biggest multi-sport events.

"The foundations for what could be the best Paralympic Games ever have been laid here in London; most of the venues are ready, we're expecting more media and TV coverage than ever before, and the demand for tickets will be unprecedented."

Approximately two million tickets will go on sale to the public between now and Games-time, with 1.5 million being available in the first phase.
