Following a scintillating summer of competition, UKA has announced the winners of the 2011 McCain UK Combined Events Challenge.
The series, comprising of eight events in total, has now concluded with Daniel Awde and Gemma Weetman (both coached by Greg Richards) confirmed as senior winners.
Topping the table in the Senior Men’s CE Challenge, with an impressive 23398 points, was Woodford Green’s Daniel Awde. Former Olympian Awde firmed his position at the top of the table with a second place finish and a personal best of 7889 points at the European Cup in Brassanon, Italy.
With Awde taking the top prize of £200, the second prize of £125 goes to Maxim Hall. The Dartford Harrier scored 6867 at the England Athletics Senior Combined Events Championships, 6,829 at the Hexham Combined Events International and a PB of 6893 at the McCain Combined Events Championship Final.
Finishing in third place is Michael Sweeney (Mike Bull) of Liverpool Harriers with 19105 points.
In the Senior Women’s events, Gemma Weetman of Oswestry Olympian finished in first place with a score of 15715 points. Weetman competed in the first three McCain UK Combined Events Challenges at the start of the season.
Taking second place was Laura McGawn (Andrew Hughes) of Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow with a total of 14886 points. But hot on her heels, finishing just 169 points behind, was compatriot Karla Drew (Antonio Minichiello) from Team Southampton.
Drew had a strong start to the season, setting a personal best of 5061 at the England Athletics Senior Combined Events Championships, a big improvement on her PB in 2010 of 4716. She then continued to better her 2010 best with 4752 points at the Hesham International and finishing the season with 4904 at the McCain Final.
The Junior Men’s table saw Liam Ramsay (Mike Corden) of City of Sheffield take the top spot, consistently scoring over 7000 points and finishing with a total of 21204, whilst Katy Marchant (Toni Minichiello) of Leeds City AC was first in the Junior Women’s CE Challenge.
