A first taste of athletics competition…

This series of events introduces children to the competitive element of athletics and the real variety that it has to offer through a series of local, regional and national events.

It is an exciting and fun athletics team game:

  • A child friendly format that uses brightly coloured equipment specially designed with safety in mind.

  • A competition focus for budding athletes who have learned skills when taking part in Aviva Startrack and Aviva Shine Awards.

  • An effective first step into the world of traditional track and field athletics. Many of the current UK track and field stars started their careers in Aviva Sportshall including Olympic Bronze medallist Kelly Sotherton.

There are three Aviva Sportshall national programmes:

Aviva Fun in Athletics for 9-11 year olds.
  • The emphasis is on fun, enjoyment and giving one's best for the good of the team.

  • Teams of 15 boys and girls are raised from counties or districts to take part in Regional festivals of fun.

Aviva Sportshall 'Team Challenge' for under 13’s

  • An exciting competition requiring competitors to have a multi-skilled approach to athletics.

  • Each county or district is invited to raise a team of 12 boys and 12 girls to take part in a regional Final

Aviva Sportshall 'All-Rounder' for under 15’s

  • A multi-event measurement of fitness and ability requiring skilful team management. Each county or district is invited to select teams of 7 boys and 7 girls to compete in a Regional Final.

At Regional Finals all over the UK teams compete for a place in the UK Final. Anyone who has been to this event will know that talent and team spirit is abundant.

Since its modest beginning in the North West of England Sportshall Athletics has spread to every corner of the United Kingdom and to over 30 other countries throughout the world. Its success has been outstanding and over 500,000 children are now involved in the United Kingdom alone.

For more information visit the Sportshall website.

I want to take part!
If you are between the age of 8 and 15 and would like to take part in a Aviva Sportshall Event, here’s how:

Where is my nearest Aviva Sportshall competition and when does it take place?
Aviva Sportshall takes place from October until April. The events take place all over the UK and you can find a full list including their dates and venues on the Sports Hall Athletics web site.

How do I qualify for one of these events?
Each county or district raises a team to take part in an Aviva Sportshall Regional final. In order to qualify for your county team you must first ask your local athletic club if they are participating in the Aviva Sportshall programme.

Where is my local athletics club?
You can find out where you nearest club is via the club search facility by clicking here

How much will it cost?
Athletic clubs normally do have a charge and this amount varies from region to Region. All Aviva Sportshall Regional events are free.

What if I already take part in athletic activities?
If you already enjoy or take part in any kind of athletic activity then Aviva Sportshall is for you, there are many exciting events to try and it’s a great way to develop skills and to keep competing during the winter months.

What if I have never done athletics before?
The Aviva Fun in Athletics programme is the ideal way to start. Much of the equipment is specially designed to cater for all abilities and it has an exciting team format which means that you can take part with your friends.

Are there any other ways to take part in Aviva Sportshall?
Yes, there are Aviva Sportshall outreach competitions called Agility Challenges. These are taking place at all the major track meetings during the summer and anyone can take part. Also, if your club or school is taking part in the Aviva Shine Awards ask your coach or teacher about the Aviva Sportshall award section. Full details are available on the Sports Hall Athletics website.

How can I get involved in Sportshall as an organiser?
If you are a Sports Development Officer and are looking to enter a team in Aviva Sportshall or to develop Sports hall Athletics in your area then please call the Sports Hall Athletics Association on 01606 350 845.
