Helping to develop your skills…

This programme provides year-round coaching and training opportunities after school, during holiday periods and at weekends to help children hone their skills.

Aviva Startrack is UKA's flagship grassroot athletics programme, aiming to give 8 to 15 year olds real athletics experiences, this is where World Heptathlon Champion Jessica Ennis started her athletics career as a 10 year old, she is now an Ambassador for the Aviva UKA Academy.

Aviva Startrack is led by UKA qualified coaches, across the UK. In 2008 over 23,000 children took part in over 600 schemes. The programme is not only a fantastic tool for athletics clubs, but a great resource for schools, sports partnerships, colleges, community groups and local authorities who are aiming to provide children in their area with a range of sporting options.

Athletics is the foundation for all other sports as athletes run, jump and throw across the range of disciplines. You can be sure that as an Aviva Startrack organiser you will be giving children the best possible sporting start by using this template for your local schemes.

Aviva Startrack can be offered all year round, as an after school club, a holiday programme, or the basis of an athletics club's youth development programme, but the secret of the success of Aviva Startrack is simply the creation of a fun athletics experience in a safe and enjoyable environment.

UKA's key aims for the Aviva Startrack scheme are:

  • Raise the profile of athletics amongst children in the community.

  • Introduce children to athletics in a fun and exciting format.

  • Introduce athletics to minority groups.

  • Introduce, support and develop coaches and officials.

  • Help more children to stay involved in athletic athletics, through increasing the level of athletics ‘follow on’ activity – from school to Aviva Startrack and from Aviva Startrack to club.

  • Help children to improve their athletic skill and give them the opportunity to progress their performance.

Are you aged between 8 and 15?

Yes? Then Aviva Startrack is the scheme for you.

Here is how you do it:

Where is my local scheme?
You can find details of all the Aviva Startrack schemes and get contacts of scheme organisers in your area by hitting the "Schemes" button.

You should then contact your local organiser to find out more about when and where the scheme is happening and how you can apply to attend the course.

How much will it cost?
The costs will vary depending upon the area you live in, the duration of the scheme and who is organising your scheme. Contact your local organiser to find out how much it will cost.

Does it matter that I’ve never done any athletics before?
NO! Aviva Startrack is an athletics programme that is open to any person between the ages of 8 and 15 regardless of experience, ability, gender or background.

What if I already take part in athletics activities?
Then Aviva Startrack is an opportunity for you to develop your skills further with UKA qualified coaches. Throughout the scheme there will be the opportunity for you to gain experience in events that you may not have tried before and also pick up some great coaching tips for your future athletics activity.

What should I wear?
All you need to take part in Aviva Startrack is a pair of shorts, a T-shirt, trainers and a tracksuit or something warm to put on if it gets cold – don’t forget to bring a drink!

Your Aviva Startrack scheme organiser will be able to tell you how long the scheme is, how much it will cost and how you can apply.

Alternatively, there are loads of ways to continue with athletics, whether you are interested in running, jumping or throwing. Click here for more information

If you and your child think Athletics is the sport to try then Aviva Startrack is the way to start!

Each scheme operates a programme that covers all aspects of the sport - kids are encouraged to Run, Jump and Throw.

Most schemes operate for at least a week and utilise holiday periods, all year round. Local Organisers are encouraged to make strong links with local clubs and ensure that kids with the right level of talent and enthusiasm to try more can make the next step into our sport.

You can find out more by clicking the events tab above and looking for contacts in your English Region or Celtic Nation.

If you have any problem or a scheme date clashes with holidays then please feel free to email avivastartrack@uka.org.uk with questyions you may have.

We are well aware that a huge number of schools have strong and well-established links with the Athletics Community in their area.

Aviva Startrack can add strength to that path from school to club. Schemes operate all over the UK and ensure that larger numbers of young people can take steps into the sport and make choices to experience more about the event areas they aspire to perform well at.

Local Organisers can promote their schemes to your children and support you to highlight the fun and exciting opportunities that our sport can offer. A number of schemes deliver coaching in schools to support curricular activity.

By making links from your school to a local Aviva Starttrack programme we believe that it adds value to the work you do in school and ensures an easy path for kids to follow with manageable steps that support every child and not just the young people who may "stand out" at an early age.

To find out who is delivering Aviva Starttrack near you and when schemes happen please click the Events tab, above.

The Startrack organiser form has now been taken off line in preparation for the launch of our new Aviva UKA Academy website in June 2010.

If you wish to organise a scheme to take place towards end of May or early June over the bank holiday weekend then please email avivastartrack@uka.org.uk and one of our team will be able to help you with this task.

Please note - registration for organising schemes taking place this summer onwards will be available from w/c 14 June 2010

If you are looking to develop athletics in your area and think that Aviva Startrack can help, then please call UKA and speak to us on 0121 7138 400 or email avivastartrack@uka.org.uk

An application to become a Aviva Startrack Organiser can now be completed online. On receipt of this form we will charter you as an official Aviva Startrack organiser and send you your welcome pack and CD-Rom manual.

If you are already organising an athletics programme in your area but think that Aviva Startrack support could benefit your scheme then you should also call UKA on 0121 7138 400. We would be happy to help you adapt your scheme to fit the Aviva Startrack format.

Why get involved with Aviva Startrack?
It is nationally recognised and has strong sponsorship support from Aviva. The programme is year round and provides resource material, staff training, goodie bags for the athletes, t-shirts, competitions and a high quality UKA support network that embraces all other components of the Aviva UKA Academy.

In the coming months, organisers will also be able to download resources and templates to help with the delivering of their schemes.

More information will appear here on the application process for project funding in 2009, please contact the Aviva Startrack team for general enquiries on 0121 7138 400 or avivastartrack@uka.org.uk

One of the principles of Aviva Startrack is that every athlete taking part in a local scheme is given information about post scheme follow on activity.

We want to ensure that every athlete is given maximum opportunity to stay in the sport, after their initial introduction to running, jumping and throwing, via Aviva Startrack.

Detailed guidance on providing follow on activity can be found within the organiser CD Rom manual. However, you will find below, a brief guide to what you may offer as follow on activity.

Joining the local athletics club will be an ideal way of continuing with athletics for a number of children. They can continue to develop new skills under the guidance of UKA qualified coaches, whilst having fun in a safe and controlled environment.

All Aviva Startrack schemes have to link with a club to ensure the opportunity for progression is in place. It is of considerable benefit to work closely with local athletics clubs to ensure the long-term development of athletes within your area.

An ideal activity to direct children to is Aviva Sportshall. With the majority of Aviva Startrack schemes taking place during summer, the start of the Aviva Sportshall season in September is a fantastic way for the children to continue participating in a competitive environment. If you need any more information on Sportshall Athletics in your area, please visit the Sportshall website.

For older children, they may be looking for an alternative way of continuing their involvement with athletics. In recent years, a number of Aviva Startrack organisers have arranged Young Officials courses for the older children on their schemes. They can then use these new skills in future Aviva Startrack events or competitions like Aviva Sportshall

Similarly, coaching might be of interest to the older athletes. Funding can be obtained from a number of sources to minimise the costs of gaining a UKA coaching qualification. This can subsequently assist in the organisation of future Aviva Startrack events, as there is a fresh supply of coaches to staff your scheme. See the Coach Education section of this website for further details.

This is not an exhaustive list of what can be offered to athletes on your scheme. We urge you to be creative in the opportunities that you promote, in order that as many young athletes as possible are given the opportunity to stay in the sport and realise their potential.

Latest:

Organiser welcome packs are due for distribution over the next couple of weeks. However all information in the packs is available in the organisers' resources section of the web. Please contact the Startrack team on 0121 713 8400 for any queries.

This year the goodie bag consists of the bag (drawstring), t-shirt, cap, drinks bottle and wrist-bands. No printed material (certificates, activity booklets) are being supplied this year.

Once you've been part of an Aviva Startrack scheme we hope it has inspired you to do more.

Many Aviva Startrack athletes have discovered that there are a number of fun and exciting ways in which you can take part in the sport.

One of the most obvious is to take a visit to your local athletics club. All Aviva Startrack scheme organisers have to link with an athletics club in the area, so that you can continue to enjoy running, jumping and throwing, long after the scheme has finished.

Why not ask your Startrack coaches for more information, or click here for details of your local club.

The Aviva UKA Academy offers a whole range of excintg athletics options and nother great way to continue with athletics is Aviva Sportshall.

This is a fantastic indoor competition, that takes place during the winter months, and means you don’t get cold and wet! Aviva Sportshall allows you to put the skills you learned at Aviva Startrack into practice against other teams. Visit the Sportshall Section for more details.

Many Schools are now running after school athletics clubs throughout the year, based on Aviva Sportshall and Aviva Startrack activities. Why not ask your PE teacher or School Sports Coordinator if this is happening at your school?

Many Aviva Startrack schemes take place with the help of the local council Sport Development department. To help you continue improving your skills as much as possible, many local sports centres might hold athletics sessions during the week. This could be happening in your town – contact your local council for more information.

If you are one of the older Aviva Startrack athletes, you may want to think about a different way of staying involved with athletics.

A number of Aviva Startrack scheme organisers have run Young Officials courses for some of the athletes attending their scheme. Ask your scheme organiser for more information.

If officiating isn’t for you, you may want to get involved with coaching athletics, helping others to improve their skills. Visit our coaching pages for more information on the courses that we offer.

We hope that this information will be of use to you as you look to continue your participation in one of the great athletics opportunities all over the UK.
