event academy programme

The British Athletics Para Event Academy was set up in 2013 as the first stepping stone into the National Programme for performance athletes and their coaches who have the aspiration to compete on the World Stage.

The Programme aims to provide an introduction into an elite training environment with exposure to sessions from technical experts and input from specialist practitioners.

The programme invites selected athletes and their coaches to attend three fully funded day (Sunday) camps per year at the British Athletics High Performance Centre in Loughborough over the winter season. Each athlete will have two years automatic selection into the Event Academy Squad. On occasion, athletes will be offered a third year based on their
development needs and progression. In addition, guest places will be offered throughout the year to athletes who display potential.

The days offer experience of working in a performance environment alongside some of the best athletes in the country and exposure to the wider support services that can benefit elite athletes. Coaches will have the opportunity to work alongside like-minded event specialists and access a forum of coaches for mentored support in line with their own development in the sport.

During these camps, athletes and coaches will have access to:
• Event specific technical sessions
• Strength & Conditioning workshops
• Nutrition workshops
• Sports Psychology workshops
• International/Paralympic athlete Q&A workshops
• Programme planning advise (coaches)

Selection for the Event Academy Squad is subject to extensive performance data collection of British rankings and yearly performance progression and is based on the following criteria:
• Current British ranking
• Progression in chosen event over last 1-2 years
• Realistic potential ability to reach Talent Development Squad within two years
• Realistic potential ability to reach Podium Potential Squad within four years
• Engagement with club training
