Volunteer Opportunity in East London – 07 February 2008

A volunteer opportunity has arisen at New Directions, an alternative school and Pupil Referral Unit for the London Borough of Newham.

The school caters for Year 11 late admission students (most of whom have English as an additional language) and Years 10-11 students whose needs would be better met by a non-mainstream school.

The school are looking for somebody to help coordinate either of the following projects:

  • A mixed gender, after school running club (Thursdays 3:15 – 4:30pm).
  • A multi-sports programme aimed at female students of mainly Muslim faith (Fridays pm) – a female volunteer with experience of athletics is required for this role.

The students participating in these activities are aged 15-16 years and do not have behaviour issues. Most have English as an additional language. For further information about these opportunities, please contact:

Do you know an inspirational young volunteer? – 27 November 2007

The Young Achievers Trust has launched a national search for England’s star achievers with the opening of nominations for the prestigious Young Achievers Awards.

The Awards recognise and celebrate inspirational young volunteers aged between 16 and 25, including those who are involved in sport.

If you know somebody who may be deserving of this award, please contact the Volunteer team at UK Athletics at volunteer@ukathletics.org.uk for further information and a nomination pack.

 

Sport England launch new resource centre – 26 September 2007

Sport England, the organisation tasked with increasing and sustaining participation in community sport, has announced details of an innovative new resource centre to support clubs and individuals in promoting their sports.

The online resource provides over 500 free images of community sport, alongside 50 ‘How To’ guides, a calendar of events, and a list of essential contacts to support the promotion of sport, clubs and volunteering.

The site, which can be found by clicking here, also has information on how to request a visit by a Sporting Champion and a discussion forum for volunteers across the country to share their experiences.

 

‘Inspiring Leaders’ seminar announced – 30 July 2007

Manchester Institute of Sport and Physical Activity has designed an exciting new learning programme for voluntary and community groups involved in sport called,’Inspiring Leaders’.

The Seminar Programme will help participants identify and develop their leadership and management skills, which can then be used to support the coordination of volunteers within clubs.

Two seminars series are planned; firstly from Sept – Nov 2007, and then again in Jan – Mar 2008, in Central and North Manchester respectively. The sessions will be led by individuals with a wealth of experience in volunteer coordination and sport.

The closing date for applications is Tuesday 4 September.
