Coaching Qualifications Pathway

This qualification is for those who wish to take the first step into coaching and working with athletes aged 8 years upwards.

The Coaching Assistant Award provides prospective coaches with an introduction to coaching athletics via a range of running, jumping and throwing skills and activities. It will also focus on the introduction of the fundamental movement skills that underpin athletics activities. To support the multi-event approach for developing athletes, Coaching Assistants will be expected to assist in the delivery of a range of sessions that develop running, jumping and throwing skills in their club.

This qualification is the cornerstone of the On-Track qualifications pathway. The course consists of four face to face contact days, which includes a practical assessment. The course also includes an online knowledge test. Candidates will be able to plan a progressive training programme for athletes coaching a range of activities to prepare the developing athlete to run, jump and throw. Candidates will be able to start refining their coaching in one chosen technical event group area. When qualified you will be insured to coach without supervision.

The programme has been designed to support coaches in working with athletes in the foundation to event group development stage (typically under 18s) and advocates a multi-event approach in the development of athletes.

This running fitness qualification is the cornerstone of the Off-Track pathway. It is primarily for those working with Off-Track runners who wish to improve their fitness. All applicants must be active leaders or coaches who have completed as a minimum a Level 1 Assistant Coach, Fitness in Running & Walking, LiRF or Coaching Assistant qualification. CiRF is about the broad application to non-track-based endurance running rather than specific events or distances and is not designed for coaches who want to work with runners taking part in track based events such as 800m–10k track races or steeplechase. When qualified you will be insured to coach without supervision.

RPL is a process aimed at recognising, assessing and confirming the competencies a learner has obtained from other sources. RPL assessment enables learners, where appropriate, to forgo training (or elements of it) and move directly to having their competencies assessed. Although RPL is not necessarily a quick process, it aims to provide applicants (learners) with a flexible approach to having their skills and knowledge assessed against learning outcomes and assessment criteria.
