Let's talk about Race

8 July 2020

Following on from my statement last month about the immediate action we were going to take following the death of George Floyd, I am pleased to be able to provide a further update on activities.

We have, as promised, appointed our ED & I athlete advocate in Imani-Lara Lansiquot and our Executive Champion for Race in Mark Draisey. I look forward to working with both in these crucial areas moving forward.

We have enjoyed some very educational roundtable ‘Let’s Talk About Race’ sessions over the last few weeks which have clearly identified the racial issues that need to be addressed. I have been joining some of these sessions to hear this for myself and I am very grateful for the openness and honesty that I have witnessed. The uptake to participate in these has been excellent and we are delighted to be able to schedule more sessions due to their popularity.

As I stated last month, we will be using the themes and issues raised at these sessions to prioritise the work we need to do moving forward and we look forward to communicating the findings and subsequent action plan from these forums in September.

Anecdotally we hear that people are genuinely encouraged that their voice will be heard and that these sessions are giving them faith that there will be action. Thank you for all the valuable feedback we have received so far, we cannot bring about change unless everyone engages, and this is exactly what has happened with these sessions.

We look forward to really driving change in the sport of athletics.
