UK Athletics received a further boost today with confirmation that Chair Nic Coward will remain in post until at least post Tokyo 2021 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Coward, who joined the organisation in January 2020, moved into the position of Interim Chair in March and along with CEO Joanna Coates has overseen the organisation through a period of change following the Dame Sue Street Report in May 2020.

The fixed term period was initially to run until post Tokyo Games, and with the postponement as a result of the pandemic, this has been now been extended until October 2021, at which time the position of Chair will be subject to a recruitment process.

Meanwhile, UKA can also confirm that Christian Malcolm has commenced his work as the newly appointed Head Coach to the Olympic Programme, albeit currently from Australia. It is expected Malcolm will return to the UK in November.

Finally, a key role has this week been advertised for the organisation, with the post of Director of Development being recruited as a key part of the organisation’s restructure.

With the position set to oversee essential areas including coaching, officiating and safeguarding, this member of the UKA Senior Leadership Team will be helping to set the strategic and cultural direction of the organisation aligned to the UK wide strategy developed jointly with the Home Country Athletics Federations.

Joanna Coates, UKA CEO said:

“I’m delighted with these three key developments which support the progress the organisation is making. Having the continuity of Nic’s leadership as Chair for a further period and the added boost of an earlier than expected start for Christian helps us to push on with our new organisational strategy without further delay.

“The post of Development Director is a hugely important role overseeing key components to the running of the sport. It is a significant hire for us and will help delivery across the entire sport. It will mean Coaching and Safeguarding are amongst a number of essential areas directly represented within the senior leadership team.

“We’re very much looking forward to making this appointment and adding to our new senior leadership line up.”
