Tom Parsons
Parsons - memorable victory at Olympic Trials

02 April 2009

Tickets for UKA’s summer series of major events go on sale today with Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium hosting the series opener, the Aviva World Trials & UK Championships, on 10, 11 and 12 July.

The meet in Birmingham is sure to provide plenty of excitement as athletes from across the UK battle it out for a place on the Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for August’s IAAF World Championships in Berlin.

Last year saw Beijing’s Olympic silver medal triple jumper Phillips Idowu set the best distance in the world for the season with 17.58m, whilst local man Tom Parsons matched the Olympic standard of 2.30m to take victory in the high jump.

Chief Executive of UKA, Niels de Vos said:

“Anyone who watched the television coverage of the Beijing Olympics last summer could not fail to have been exhilarated by the exploits of the world’s greatest athletes in the Bird’s Nest track and field stadium.

“We saw some magnificent performances from magnificent sportsmen and women. This summer UKA will bring some of that magic out from people’s living rooms and on to their doorsteps.

“The Aviva televised events series in Birmingham, London and Gateshead will include some of the sport’s very biggest names both from Britain and overseas. This is the first summer of the build up to London 2012, it is also another World Championship year, so athletics will be at the forefront of world sport again this summer.

“The Aviva televised series offers people a unique opportunity to witness some truly high class sport at low prices.”

Adult tickets for the Aviva World Trials & UK Championships start at £10 with family passes available at £32.  Tickets can be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.co.uk and at www.uka.org.uk and by phone on 08000 55 60 56.

And if you purchase your tickets via the telephone hotline before April 16, quoting PRESS20, you will receive a discount of 20 per cent.

The season continues after Birmingham with the Aviva London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace on 24 and 25 July, the final chance for many athletes from across the globe to showcase their potential ahead of the World Championships three weeks later.

And there will be a special homecoming for the GB & NI team as athletics returns to the north east for the Aviva British Grand Prix on Monday 31 August at Gateshead Stadium.
