Jenny Meadows indoor

28 December 2009

World-bronze medallist Jenny Meadows insists that competing in Great Britain will be the key to her success as she looks to impress at the World Indoor Championships.

Meadows will compete at the Aviva International Match, the Aviva World Trials and UK Championships and the Aviva Grand Prix and she hopes that strong performances at each of the UK based indoor events will put her in a good position for the World Indoor Championships in Doha.

The 800m runner, who is renowned for being a determined competitor, is adamant that last year’s bronze medal at the World Championships will not be her last.

She said: “I’d like to go to the World Indoor Champs in Doha, but I have three races before then in Glasgow, Sheffield and then Birmingham.  I’m not going to be racing outside of Britain because I think we have great tracks and facilities here, so I don’t need to go anywhere else.

“It sits really well with me being a favourite.  In Berlin I had the pressure to medal, while a couple of years earlier I was fifth in the final of the world indoors but I was ranked third and I couldn’t cope with the pressure of being a medal favourite.  But I’ve learnt from experience of that and how to cope with that pressure and now I want to medal at every Championships I compete in.”

Meadows will star for the Aviva GB and N.I team in Glasgow on January 30.  She is also due to run in Birmingham at the National Indoor Arena on February 20.

“I think I had that image of ‘Jenny Meadows, she’s a hard worker, gutsy but come the major championships she gets knocked out in the semi finals’, and that’s the image I had created through my performances.

“But now I want to carry on with the image of associating me with the podium and that starts in Glasgow and will hopefully go right through to Doha, via Sheffield and Birmingham.”

Tickets for the Aviva Grand Prix at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham on Saturday 20th February are available by phone on 08000 556 056 or online at www.uka.org.uk
