There has been so much indoor activity in the first three weeks of this year that at 9am today, the Power of 10 website detailed 2854 athletes and 6446 performances already in 2007.

And there will be more by the time you read this.

For Rob Whittingham, chief statistician of the inspirational website set-up to monitor UK athletics on the way to London 2012, reports: “The number of athletes already on the rankings is twice as many as at this time last year. Having the Lee Valley Athletics Centre open obviously helps!

The South of England and Junior North of England Championships have all been entered and will appear in full today. The first rankings from these meetings were available at 7.00am on Sunday. There was another update on Sunday and two on Monday, reflecting the huge changes being made to the rankings.

“Performances from Scotland and Wales appeared on the rankings on Monday and will all be entered today.

“The results from the UK Indoor City Challenge were entered Monday morning and are already on the rankings.”

Even more important for athletes aspiring to international level, Whittingham added: “2007 targets have started to be entered: the seniors are complete and several athletes have already made them ... for examples, Samson Oni, Rob Mitchell, Martin Lloyd, Jessica Ennis, Susan Moncrieff and Julie Crane in the high jump, Steve Lewis, Scott Simpson, Christian North, Luke Cutts, Kate Dennison and Ellie Spain in the pole vault, Gillian Cooke in the long jump, Phillips Idowu, Julian Golley, Nadia Williams, Jasmine Regis and Gillian Kerr in the triple jump.”
