UK Athletics has accepted an invitation to send a Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland senior women’s team to the 25th Yokohama Ekiden Relay in Japan on Saturday 25 February.

Due to the strength in depth and rapid improvement of the UK’s female distance athletes, UKA have decided to use this competitive opportunity to focus on the retention and further development of our emerging distance runners.

The relay consists of six legs run over distances ranging from 5k to 10km.

At team of six senior women will be selected, along with a travelling reserve on Monday 5 February following the World Trials incorporated into the BUSA Cross Country Championships at the University of Bath two days earlier. When considering selection, a strong emphasis will be placed on performances at the trial. To ensure the strongest possible team goes to Japan, the selectors will consider other performances on the road and cross country throughout the season. Any senior athlete selected for the Norwich Union GB&NI team for the World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa will not be considered for the Ekiden Relay.

Any athlete who is not competing in Bath and who wishes to considered for selection must ensure they contact UKA Senior Coordinator for Endurance Spencer Barden before the selection meeting is held.
