East Ready for Euro Challenge

Michael East is adamant he will give it his best shot for Great Britain at the forthcoming European Championships in Gothenburg.

East would never have thought four weeks ago that he would be in shape to challenge for a place in the GB squad, but after a remarkable turnaround from injury he asked the selectors to pick him for the trip to Sweden. They duly responded, even though the former Commonwealth 1500 metres champion had failed to meet their directive of the elite standard for the meeting, which begins on August 7 in Sweden.

But they were obviously swayed when East ran a swift time in last Friday's Norwich Union London Grand Prix, where he finished fifth and proved that he has the ability to perform successfully in his second European Championships appearance. East, who has bravely battled against injuries for the last 15 months, said: "Basically I have been thinking things through with my coach Mark Rowland and in fairness my training had been going very, very well."

He continued: "I said over a month ago 'watch this space' and I really meant that, although I thought I would not be running until much later in the season.

"But last Tuesday, having spoken with Mark I thought there was an opportunity for me to challenge for a place and I took the decision to run at Crystal Palace.

"The way things had worked out when I managed to get back into full training and particularly after the hard training I did at altitude in Colorado in March and April, and the following month in Portugal has given me the strength which will ensure I can hopefully match my ambitions in Gothenburg."
