There were some near misses for Team GB in the athletics arena on Thursday at the European Youth Olympics currently taking place in Tampere, Finland.

In the men’s high jump, Joseph Kent cleared a personal best of 2.11m to finish 4th, just 3cm away from the medals. In the women’s 100m hurdles final, Georgina Atkins was 5th in the women’s 100m hurdles in 13.81 (+1.7m/s). Earlier in the day Atkins eased through long jump qualifying in 9th with 5.78m (-0.8m/s).

In the women’s shot final, Yasmin Spencer was 12th with a best of 11.60m, Laura Burke was 6th in the women’s 400m hurdles in 61.65 and Abbi Carter was 10th in the women’s hammer final with a best of 50.91m.

Liam Clowes, 4th in the 100m final earlier in the week, eased through to his second final, cruising to victory in his 200m semi-final in 21.65 (+0.7m/s).  Clowes said: “I feel I’ve got a good time in me. It’s all about conserving my energy and making sure I’m in the right shape.”

The women’s 4x100m team were 3rd in their semi final to qualify for the final with 47.12. The men’s 4x100m team were eliminated after failing to get the baton round.
