Olympic bronze medallist, Kelly Sotherton visited the University of Birmingham last week to encourage students to sign up to be ‘secret agents’ for the European Athletics Indoor Championships.

The event, which will be staged at the NIA from 2-4 March 2007, needs an army of around 800 volunteers to help ensure that the Championships is a success.

Sotherton, based at the Birmingham High Performance Centre, explained why volunteers are such an important ingredient to ensure a successful Championships: “Having participated in sports events across the world I have experienced first hand how crucial volunteers are to the competitors taking part.

“We rely on them for information about where we need to go and how we can get there. It is also great to see smiling faces and have helpful people on hand, especially when you are nervous as you prepare to compete.”

Also attending the launch was 100.7 Heart fm presenter Matt Wilkinson who signed himself up to be a volunteer whilst sporting a tuxedo to help spread the 007 message. 100.7 Heart fm are the official radio station for the Championships.

The volunteer scheme has a ‘007’ theme because of the year in which the event will be staged and because the volunteers will be working behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of the Championships.

The Organising Committee’s Head of Volunteers, Viki Cartwright explained: “An event like the European Athletics Indoor Championships can not be staged without the support of hundreds of people who give up their spare time to be part of a special event such as this.

The volunteer roles available are varied and include drivers, access stewards, media centre helpers and team attaches. Although the launch was held at the University of Birmingham, who are an official sponsor of the European Athletics Indoor Championships, organisers are looking for people of all ages and from all walks of life to come forward to volunteer.

The European Athletics Indoor Championships is an EAA (European Athletic Association) event which is being organised by UK Athletics and Birmingham City Council, with financial support from the National Lottery through UK Sport’s World Class Events programme.

The simplest way to sign up to be a secret agent for the Championships is to log onto the official event website www.birminghamathletics2007.com/volunteers and fill in the online application form or call 0121 464 2012 to ask for a form to be sent by post or fax.
