Young Athletes League

Last year’s runners-up Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers won the UKA Young Athletes’ League Auxiliary Final at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham, on Saturday 2 September.

Match result: 1 Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers 797.5; 2 Leeds City 722; 3 Sale Harriers Manchester 717.5; 4 Harrow AC 716.5; 5 Cannock and Stafford AC 631; 6 Notts AC 608.5; 7 Scotland (Shettleston Harriers / Giffnock North) 607.5; 8 Northern Ireland (Regent House / Lagan Valley) 467.5.

Despite a cold wind – there were head winds of 4 metres per second and more during the sprints – and frequent showers, there were a total of 160 personal best performances.

Given the discouraging weather, there were some particularly fine performances.

In the Under 17 Men’s events … English Schools long jump champion Nonso Okolo (Shaftesbury) warmed-up for next weekend’s UK School Games by scoring a winning double: 6.72m in his No.1 event, 13.44m in the triple jump and went home with an Athlete of the Match award. Chris Harvey (Cannock) was in a class of his own in the middle distances, winning the 800m in 1:55.87 and the 1500m in 4:09.1. Chris Bennett (Shaftesbury) was almost on a different planet in the hammer, reaching 58.72m, 12.10m further than his nearest rival!

Andrew Robertson (Sale) won the 200m into a 3.2 head wind in 22.67 – closely followed by Reiss Maxwell (Notts), who clocked 23.00. Michael Warner (Notts) clocked 51.23 to control the 400m. A thrilling 100m hurdles was won by Tom Casey (Leeds) in 13.91, four-hundredths ahead of Andrew Pearson (Notts). Allan Mackay (Shettleston) improved his discus best to 49.13m and also won the shot (15.48m). Matt Stoke (Shaftesbury) won the javelin with a PB, 53.27m.

Of the Under 17 Women… Robyn Rashford (Sale) scored a sprint double, clocking a 200m PB of 25.57 despite a 2.1 head wind and romping home well clear in the 100m in 12.7. Cally Read (Cannock) front-ran to 800m victory in 2:15.69. Charlotte Woods (Sale) clocked a 1500m PB of 4:43.1 in finishing eight seconds clear. Abigail Heywood (Sale) and Sarah Clifford (Shaftesbury) both set the pole vault meeting record at 3.00m (it was the first time the event had figured in the Final and future contestants will hope for friendlier conditions) and another Abigail of Sale, Irozuru won the long jump with 5.61m.

Among the Under 15 Boys… Tom Mosley (Leeds) scored a sprint double – 23.49 in the 200m, chased all the way by Sale’s Aaron Crowley, who lowered his PB to 23.49 despite a head wind of 2.8; and 11.6 in the 100m by which time rain had got into the electronic timing system. This time, it was Alex Adcocks (Sale) who chased him hardest, clocking 11.8 for second place. There were Grade 1 throws from David Gilder (Notts) 48.08m in the hammer, and Tom Peacock (Shaftesbury) 39.02m in the discus and 14.40m in the shot. Phil Kennedy (Sale) won the high jump at 1.72m. And Jack Witherington (Shaftesbury) tamed the conditions so well that he won the poile vault with a PB of 3.30m.

In the Under 15 Girls events… English Schools Junior 200m Champion Shaunna Thompson (Sale) had a great day, winning the 200m in 25.42 (wind: -2.1), the long jump with a PB of 5.41m wind assisted, the 100m in 12.3 (wind: 0.0!) and then anchored her team to 4x100m triumph. Her club mate Sarah Barker clocked a PB of 4:42.8 to win the 1500m. Harriet Thompson (Cannock) ran away with the 75m hurdles in 11.89. Amy Marchant (Leeds) cleared a PB of 1.58m to win the high jump.

Of the Under 13 Boys… Robert Gayler scored a sprint double for Shaftesbury – 26.16 into a 3.6 head wind to finish 1.5 seconds clear of his 200m rivals; 12.7 into a 2.5 head wind to finish four-fifths of a second ahead in the 100m – and in between dominated the long jump by reaching 5.15m, 50cm clear of the rest. His club mate Alex Peden won the high jump at 1.45m. Jake Armstrong (Leeds) does indeed have a strong arm: he won the shot with a PB of 11.01m.

Among the Under 13 Girls… Giffnock North’s Emma Brown made her long trek from Scotland well worthwhile by winning the long jump with 4.58m and the 70m hurdles in 11.92 seconds despite one of the strongest recorded head winds of the day, 4.7 metres per second – proof positive that they breed ‘em tough up North!
