GB & NI TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR IWAS WORLD JUNIOR GAMES

27 May 2015

A 21-strong GB & NI team has been announced for the IWAS World Junior Games taking place in Stadskanaal, Holland between 2-8 July 2015.

After winning three gold medals in the T46 100m, 200m and long jump at the last edition of the event in Stoke Mandeville in 2014, Polly Maton (coach: Colin Baross) will look to add to her medal haul after an impressive start to the 2015 season. Earlier this month, the 15 year old took her personal best down from 13.45 to 13.29 in Cheltenham showing her undoubted form ahead of the forthcoming championships.

Will Smith (Jenny Archer), Sheikh Sheikh (Archer), Millie Forrest (Robert Halliwell), Mitchell Dutton (Caroline Price) who also won World Junior titles last year will return to the GB & NI team, 12 months on from winning 11 golds and 36 medals in Stoke Mandeville.

Julie Rogers (Allen Adamson), who represented ParalympicsGB in sitting volleyball at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, goes into the championships ranked number four in the world over the T42 100m after running 17.58 at the Hertfordshire County Championships three weeks ago. The 16 year old has only ran 14 competitive races since switching sports and will be keen to demonstrate her ability as she targets a place on the senior team for the IPC World Championships in Doha later this year.

Molly Kingsbury (Roger Graham), who has only recently turned 14 years old is another athlete with a promising career in front of her following her first full season of competition last year. The teenager boasts personal bests of 16.03 and 4.02m in the T37 100m and long jump respectively is just one of a long line of prestigious talents making their international debuts at the IWAS World Junior Games.

Paralympic Head Coach Paula Dunn said: “The IWAS World Junior Games offers a great platform for athletes to make that next step to the major senior championships. The likes of Hannah Cockroft, Mickey Bushell and Aled Davies have all won medals at this event and it has stood them in good stead in their transition to the senior GB & NI team.

“It is really encouraging to see so many athletes coming through the Paralympic pathway and I’m confident we will see some strong results in Stadskanaal this summer to follow up what was a successful IWAS World Junior Games in Stoke Mandeville last year.”
