Ultra-runners Set For Winschoten Test

12 September 2015

Today, the world’s best ultra-runners descend on Winschoten, Netherlands to take on the IAU 100km World Championships.

Last year’s world 100km bronze medallist Jo Zakrzewski and Commonwealth Games marathoner Steve Way will headline the Great Britain & Northern Ireland team who will be covering over 62 miles during the race on Saturday 12 September.

The British team collected two team and two individual medals at the championships in Qatar last year and expectations are high once again over the demanding circuit.

Zakrzewski will lead the women’s team as they seek to defend their team gold from Doha. The Dumfries athlete took the individual world bronze medal in a time of 7:42.02 on a successful day for the female ultra-runners in 2014. She will be joined on this occasion by Sue Harrison (Les Barnett), who also claimed bronze at the IAU European 100km Championships in 2013 and Holly Rush.

Craig Holgate and Way will return to the men’s team which won bronze in 2014. At the previous edition of the Championships, Way finished 13th and Holgate 16th contributing to the silverware success. They will be joined by Marcus Scotney who completes the strong senior men’s trio heading to the Dutch city.

The race also incorporates the 23rd IAU 100km European Championships so there is potentially even more silverware for the British team to set their eyes upon this weekend.
