EAA Permit Racewalks Meeting Leguno 14 March

Jo Jackson (Middlesbrough & Cleveland/Leeds Met Carnegie) continued her fine start to 2010 by taking 4th place in the EAA Permit Meeting  Gran Premio Citta di Lugano in Switzerland in a high class field over 20km.

A slow tactical race which saw a large bunch of 10 athletes pass 10km in a pedestrian 46.48 put any hopes of a new British Record out of the reckoning. It was not until the 15km point that the Chinese duo of Yanfei Li and Li Li made a move that split up the front group. Jackson and Olympic top 8 placer Ines Henriques (Portugal) gave chase and moved away from the rest of the field. Yanfei Li (1.31.26) held off compatriot Li Li (1.31.32) for victory and Jackson despite walking a 2nd half of 45.30 was unable to overhaul Henriques (1.32.30) to come home in 4th place (1.32.36) to go top of the UK Rankings for 2010 and achieve the UKA B standard for Barcelona. Behind Jackson, Fiona Mcgorum (Leicester RWC/UWIC) set a new personal best of 1.53.45b in 23rd place.

In the Senior Men’s race Darrel Stone (Steyning AC) completing his first 20km for a decade was on pace for the England qualifying time for Delhi (1.29.00) until the last 5km, coming home in 1.30.01  to go top of the UK rankings for 2010. Behind him Thomas Taylor (Birchfield) (1.33.07, 26th) and Scott Davies (Ilford) (1.32.25, 27th) set personal bests.

In the Junior Women’s race 16 year old Kelsey Howard (Tonbridge AC) making her international debut was a fine 6th place in 54.24. In the Junior Men’s race Antonio Cirillo (Swansea/Cardiff University) was 5th in 48.43.
