Winter Selection Policies 2009-10

Stormont, Belfast

02 October 2009

Continuing the forward momentum for UK endurance running is an important focus as we approach yet another winter season.  Building on the achievements of our most successful European Cross last winter and this summer’s World championships in Berlin, UKA will again look to support the Aviva Great Britain & Northern Ireland teams at this winter’s major cross country championships.

The European Cross Country Championships in Dublin, Ireland on 13th December 2009 is UKA’s main focus prior to Christmas and for that reason UKA has taken the decision not to support the Chiba Ekiden Relay.  Being so close to the domestic cross country trials and the European Cross means that UKA will be unable to send its strongest teams to the event.

UKA has also listened to feedback from athletes and team staff who felt that the Chiba Ekiden was lacking in competitive focus. Athletes, for example have found themselves running relay legs in isolation, resulting in a solo time trial rather than a competitive international racing opportunity.

The 2008 European Cross Country Championships proved to be the GB & NI Team’s most successful, with all athletes returning home from the championships with a medal.  UKA intends to continue to support the European Cross with full junior, U23 and senior teams.

The 2010 IAAF World Cross Country Championships will be held on Sunday 28th March 2010 in Bydgoszcz, Poland.  It is UKA’s intention to support this event with individual athletes of the appropriate standard who have developed along the international competition pathway, and are at a stage where they have demonstrated the ability to progress against world class opposition and make an impact at the World Cross.  UKA will only support teams going to the World Cross if they can realistically finish in a top eight position.

There will be a trial race for the World Cross where athletes will be able to gain selection.  The selection policy will for the first time incorporate guidelines, which will run alongside all selections.
