CAU Inter Counties Championships, Bedford, Day 2, May 30

World Junior champion Jodie Williams (coach: Mike McFarlane) made a great start to her 2011 outdoor campaign when she won the 100m in 11.35, building on her 300m run-out in Loughborough last weekend. That puts her second in the McCain Power of ten 100m rankings and top of the under-20 rankings. Nadia Williams (coach: Peter Stanley) won the triple jump with 13.40m, to go second in the McCain Power of Ten rankings.

In the Discus, Jade Nicholls (coach: Andrew Neal) won with a distance of 57.35m which puts her second in the McCain POT rankings.

Zeulenroda, Germany, May 29

Anyika Onuora (coach: Lloyd Cowan) smashed her PB to win the 100m in a time of 11.18 to go top of the McCain Power of Ten rankings and run well inside the UKA A qualifier of 11.29 for both the World Championships and Olympics. She also won the 200m in a B qualifier of 23.15 and go second to Jessica Ennis (coach: Toni Minichiello) rankings.

European Club Championships, Portugal, May 28

Chris Tomlinson (coach: Frank Attoh) had one of the best jumps of his life when he won with a wind assisted 8.28m, the wind reading being well over the limit at 3.1mps.

Newham finished fifth overall.

Hypo Meeting, Gotzis. May 28-29 

Jessica Ennis (Coach: Toni Minichiello) made a superb return to multi-event competition and continued her winning run post 2008 Olympics when she easily won the world’s biggest open multi event competition and set a world leading mark, topping the McCain Power of 10 Heptathlon rankings.

She dominated the first day and built up a 300 point lead and her score of 4097, was 17 up on her PB score at Barcelona when she won the European title last summer.

Both her high jump of 1.91m and her PB 200m time of 23.11 also took top spot on the McCain Power of 10 rankings while her other performances of 13.03 in the100m hurdles and 13.94m in the shot had put her on course for the UK record.

On day two as she produced a solid 6.37m long jump and 43.83m javelin throw and finished with a flourish to set another PB in the 800m with 2:08.46. Those 987 points gave her a total of 6790, which gave her a 251 points winning margin over Russian Tatyana Cherkova. Olympic champion Nataliya Dobrynska finished sixth on 6332 points.

Ennis’s winning total was not far outside the British record of 6831 but giving her plenty of encouragement for future competitions in 2011.

FBK Games, Hengelo, May 29 

Tiffany Ofili broke the British record when she finished fifth in a top class 110m hurdles competition. With a +1.0m/s wind, Ofil timed 12.77 compared to the winner Danielle Carruthers 12.64 and this broke Angie Thorp’s 12.80 set in the 1996 Olympics. It goes top of the McCain Power of 10 rankings.

Jenny Meadows (Coach: Trevor Painter) led a Great Britain one-two in the Women’s 800m in an outdoor 2011 best of 1:59.76 though behind her indoor best of 1:59.22. In second place Emma Jackson  (Coach: Alan Morris) set a PB of 2:00.24 to go second in the McCain Power of 10 rankings and leave behind a top international field.

Greg Rutherford finished third in the long jump with a world class 8.18m to go top of the McCain Power of 10 rankings.

Michael Rimmer (Coach: Norman Poole)  was 10th in the men’s 800m in 1:46.79 while European and Commonwealth champion Andy Turner (Lloyd Cowan) finished seventh in the men’s 110m hurdles in 13.72.

Craig Pickering (Coach: Michael Khmel) set a season’s best of 10.23 in his heat to go fifth in some top class McCain Power of Ten 100m rankings. He followed this with ninth in the final with 10.38.

In the women’s 200m, Abi Oyepitan (Coach: Tony Lester) was second on 23.33 and Joice Maduaka (Coach: Loren Seagrave)  third on 23.41. Oyepitan lies second in the McCain POT rankings with an earlier 23.21 while Maduaka went equal third with her time.

Swiss National Championships, Switzerland, 28-29 May

Double World Champion and multiple World Record holder Hannah Cockroft (coach: Peter Eriksson) lowered her T34 200m World Record to 33.33 following victory in the Swiss Open National Championships on Sunday 29 May (+1.2m/s).

Crowned double World Junior champion in April following her two senior gold medals in New Zealand in January, the Halifax athlete reduced her previous best of 33.47 which she recorded at the same event 12 months ago.

Other highlights from the event included double gold for Mickey Bushell (coach: Fred Periac) in the T53 100m (14.43/0.9m/s) – his best ever in a legal wind – and 200m (26.68/+0.5m/s); victory for three-time World champion David Weir (coach: Jenny Archer) in the T54 5000m (10:24.39) and a runners-up spot in the 400m in 46.93, only marginally outside his lifetime best; a third place finish for Shelly Woods (coach: Peter Eriksson) in the T54 1500m (3:32.06) and fourth place in the 5000m (12:08.85), and multiple personal best times for 16-year-old World Junior champion Will Smith (coach: Jenny Archer).

CAU Inter Counties Day One, Bedford, May 29

Highlights of day one included Tom Parsons (Fayyaz Ahmed) winning the high jump with 2.27m, the best outdoor jump of 2011 but just below his best of 2.31m indoors.

Seventeen-year old David Bolarinwa (Coach: John Powell) went top of the McCain Power of 10 Under 20 men’s 100m rankings with his PB 10.38 in the heat which he improved to 10.35 in the semis and then a 10.29 to win the senior final.

In the women’s javellin, Goldie Sayers went top of the McCain Power of Ten rankings in the javelin with a promising 61.61m. Laura Whittingham (Usa Utrianen) went second with 57.08m while Freya Jones (William Bushnell) went third (and top of the Under 20s) with 52.82m while Tesni Ward (David Parker) went fourth with 52.78m.

2011 UKA Inter Counties Fell Running Championship, Broughton, May 29

Runners from all corners of the UK travelled to Broughton in the Scottish Borders for this year’s UKA Inter-Counties Fell Running Championship which was also the first race in the three race UKA McCain Mountain Running Challenge. The tough Broughton Heights Hill Race course comprised 10.5km with 700m of ascent and descent.

The field was led out at a furious pace to the bottom of the first climb by James McMullan of Surrey, Chris Smith of Middlesex and Andi Jones of Greater Manchester. The three battled over the first three hills with McMullan mainly in the ascendancy before being passed by Smith on the long descent of Broomyside Hill. McMullan regained the lead over Smith on the tough climb to Hammerhead and extended it along the runnable Trahenna ridge and down the long final descent to win by just over a minute in a time of 47:33. Smith hung on to second inn 48:34 with a battle behind between current Snowdon Champion Robbie Simpson of Scotland North and four times Snowdon Champion Andi Jones, with Simpson’s downhill prowess winning out for the bronze medal in 48:43. Jones had the consolation of leading Greater Manchester to the Inter Counties team title ahead of Yorkshire in second and Cumbria in third.

The women’s race was no less competitive with current British Champion Pippa Maddams of Cumbria setting the early pace with Jo Buckley of Yorkshire. Olivia Walwyn of Cheshire and Tracey Brindley of Central Scotland made their presence felt by passing their rivals to gain the lead on the long tough second climb up Clover Hill. Brindley and Walwyn exchanged the lead over the next two summits before Walwyn pulled away along the Trahenna Ridge. Brindley came back at her again on the final descent but it wasn’t enough as Walwyn pulled away in the kilometer down the Broughton Hope Road to the finish and she timed 56:03 to Brindley’s  Lauren Jeska of Lancashire overhauled Pippa Maddams to gain the bronze medal by a margin of 22 seconds in 57:49. Scotland Central gained the team title ahead of Lancashire in second and Cumbria in third.

Geneva, May 28

James Dasaolu (Michael Khmel) made a sensational start to his 2011 campaign when he went second in the McCain Power of 10 100m rankings to Dwain Chambers when he won the 100m in 10.11 (followed by a 10.12 victory for good measure). Close behind and second in both those races were the former World Junior 100m champion Harry Aikines Aryeetey (also Khmel) who ran 10.13 in the first race and 10.17 in the second, and on the strength of his 10.13  goes third in the McCain Power of 10 rankings. The UKA A standard for the World Championships at Daegu and the London Olympics is 10.18.

Aviva European Trials and UK Championship indoor winner Danny Talbot (Coach: Daniel Cossins) smashed his PB at 200m with victory in 20.54 into a 0.8 headwind. That puts the up and coming 20-year-old top of the McCain Power of 10 rankings and is inside the UKA A standard for Daegu which is 20.60, and it’s also inside the London Olympic A standard of 20.55.

Another British winner was Conrad Williams (Coach: Linford Christie) who won the 400m in 45.71 to go top of the McCain Power of 10 rankings. Rob Tobin (Dan Pfaff) and Luke Lennon Ford (Linford Christie) were second and third in the race and went second and third in the rankings with their respective 45.86 and 46.03.

Nadine Okyere (Joe Caines) set a PB of 52.66 in finishing second in the women’s 400m and that went third in the McCain Power of 10 rankings.

Niall Flannery (Nick Dakin) smashed his PB to win the 400m hurdles in 49.88, the fifth British man to break 50 seconds this year and it puts him third in the rankings.

Another athlete to smash their PB was Meghan Beesley (Nick Dakin). She won the 400 hurdles in 56.21 to go top of the rankings and her time is well inside UKA’s B standard of 56.55 for both Daegu and London.

BMC Manchester, May 28

Young endurance talent Jessica Judd (Coach: Jeremy Freeman) set a UK Under 17 record in the 1500m with a front running 4:14.21 as she narrowly beat English 800m champion Stacey Smith (Coach: Mick Woods) by a single hundredth of a second with Stevie Stockton (Coach: Georgr Gandy) a close third in 4:14.58.

Another talented youngster, Emelia Gorecka (Woods) won the 5000m in a PB 15:51.20 which is the sixth best UK Under 20 time ever and she fought off a challenge from  Lauren Howarth (Coach: Bud Baldaro) who timed 15:51.49  while another junior Annabel Gummow timed 15:53.27 to also go inside the UK all time top 10 as the first eight went inside 16 minutes.

Gorecka’s time went top of the McCain Power of 10 Under 20 rankings and indeed second in the senior rankings while Howarth went third.

It was also close in the men’s 5000m where Tom Humphries just beat James Walsh in 13:48.94  to 13:49.09 as both set PBs. Meanwhile in fifth, Jonathan Hay (Woods) went top of the McCain Power of 10 Under 20 rankings with a PB and British Milers Club junior record of 13:57.16.

Other results include Andy Baddeley (Coach: Andrew Hobdell) – an easy winner of the men’s 800m by over a second in 1:48.56, whilst the women’s 800m was won by Lynsey Sharp in a tactical 2:06.16.

Bruce Raeside (Coach: Trevor Muxlow) won the men’s 1500 in a PB 3:41.69 and junior Adam Cotton (Coach: John Nuttall) won the B race in a PB 3:44.70 to go third in the McCain Power of 10 Under 20 rankings.

Nijmegen, May 25

Nick McCormick Coach: Lindsay Dunn) finished second in the 1500m in 3:38.07 to go top of the McCain Power of Ten rankings but just miss the Daegu and London B standard of 3:38.00.

Charlie Grice (Coach: Jon Bigg) went second in the McCain Power of 10 Under 20 rankings with his third in the B race in 3:44.03.
