Carlsbad 5km, USA, March 30
The Carlsbad 5km is regarded as one of the best road races in the world and the 2014 edition saw a fantastic victory for double Olympic finalist Julia Bleasdale (self-coached). The win, arguably the best of her career, was convincing, with her winning time of 15:06 taking 40 seconds off her personal best and putting her top of the Power of Ten 5km rankings. She now ranks third on the British all-time list.

World Masters Indoor Championships, Budapest, Hungary, March 25-30
Great Britain & Northern Ireland enjoyed a large medal haul, which included triple crowns for senior internationals James Thie (self-coached) and Anthony Whiteman over 800m, 1500m and 3,000m in the male 35 and male 40 age groups respectively. There were also gold medals for recent world age group record breakers Clare Elms and Angie Copson (coach: Ian Wilson) in the women’s over 50 and women’s over 65 categories respectively.

Iberian Trophy, Lisbon, March 29
Dewi Griffiths (Kevin Evans) went top of the UK 10,000m rankings as he smashed his personal best and set a Welsh Commonwealth Games qualifier standard with his 28:48.59, good for fifth in a strong European field. In the women’s race there was similar success as Lily Partridge (Mick Woods) made an excellent debut, clocking 32:51.26 to also top of the Power of Ten rankings and go inside the European Championships qualifying mark.

Queensland Track Classic, Brisbane, March 29
Former world champion Phillips Idowu (Gary Bourne) won with a leap of 16.63/1.6, his best jump for two years. This performances was 6cm further than he jumped two weeks ago, so he remains second on the Power of 10 rankings.

Scottish Athletics Spring Throws Open Meeting, Grangemouth, March 30
In a high quality early season women’s hammer competition, Rachel Hunter (Chris Black) added nearly two metres to her lifetime best with a throw of 62.76, taking victory and securing a Scottish Athletics Commonwealth Games qualifier in the process. Myra Perkins (John Pearson) achieved a good season’s best of 60.69, just 31cm shy of the aforementioned standard, with Kimberley Reed (Scott Reed) also recording a lifetime best of 59.84 in third. The trio now sit third, fourth and fifth in the Power of 10 rankings.

Paddock Wood Half-Marathon, March 30
Tish Jones (Will Cockerell) finished first woman by ten minutes, just missing out on a personal best with a 73:25 performance.

Scottish National Road Relays, Livingston, March 30
It was a good day for Central AC as they took both the men’s six and women’s four stage Scottish road relays titles. The men set the fastest time on this course since 1999, winning in 2.13.48 just short of a minute clear of Ron Hill Cambuslang Harriers in second, with Corstorphine A.C third. The women’s race was a much closer affair however, with Central’s margin of victory just 11 seconds over Fife AC, with Edinburgh University H & H taking bronze.
