England Athletics Disability Championships, Bedford, 1-2 August

Double Paralympic champion Hannah Cockroft (Coach: Jenni Banks) set an unofficial T34 world record for 800m on the opening afternoon of the England Athletics Disability Championships, held in conjunction with the CAU Inter-Counties and England Athletics AAA Championships (see below) at Bedford International Athletic Stadium on Saturday. The Leeds City athlete clocked 2:02.94, a time which is subject to ratifcation, benefitting from the pace set in the combined-category wheelchair race by T53 racer Sammi Kinghorn (Ian Mirfin), who was the overall winner in 2:00.66.

Earlier in the day Kinghorn had set a T53 Scottish record in the 100m heats, winning that race in 17.47 (0.0) ahead of Cockroft, who finished in 17.73. Both women were slower in the 100m wheelchair final, the Scot clocking 17.77 (+1.1) and the Yorkshire woman posting 18.38. Kinghorn also won the 400m in 61.07.

Charnwood’s 2012 Paralympic golden boy Jonnie Peacock (Steve Fudge) won race one in the seeded men’s 100m ambulant final in 11.04 (+2.0). The T44 sprinter clocked the same time in his heat (+1.6). Other 100m ambulant winners were T38 athlete Shaun Burrows (Joseph McDonnell), who ran 11.86 (+1.0) and T35 sprinter Jordan Howe (Keith Antoine), who recorded 12.82 (+1.5).

Scottish T12 Commonwealth Games Champion Libby Clegg (Joe McDonnell) clocked a season’s best of 12.47 (+0.3) in the women’s 100m ambulant event. She was followed home by T44 athletes Laura Sugar (Femi Akinsanya) who set a personal best of 13.55, and Sophie Kamlish (Rob Ellchuk), who crossed the line in 13.60.

Gateshead Harrier and F32 Paralympic veteran Stephen Miller (Ros Miller) took gold in the club throw with 28.48m. Abbie Hunnisett (Camilla Thrush) won the women’s title with a throw of 19.25m.

The performance of day two came from Hollie Arnold (Anthony Hughes), the reigning F46 javelin IPC world champion. Competing against able-bodied rivals in the open Inter Counties-England Athletics Championships event, she finished ninth with a PB of 40.29m in Bedford. 

The fastest 200m time came from James Arnott (Ryan Freckleton). The T46 athlete clocked 24.00 (-0.5) in race two of the seeded men’s ambulant event, finishing ahead of T20 sprinter Paul Davidson (24.43) and T42 Paralympic 200m champion Richard Whitehead (26.22). Race one was won by Burrows in 24.04 (-1.2).

Reigning European T35 100m and 200m champion Maria Lyle (Tabo Huntley) clocked her fastest ever 200m time by a margin on 0.53 but the 15-year-old’s 30.0 was hand-timed and minus a wind reading. The Scottish schoolgirl finished third in the women’s ambulant final, behind T13 Erin McBride (Robert Roberts), who clocked 27.6, and Sugar (Akinsanya) who ran 28.8.

CAU Inter Counties and England Athletics Senior AAA Championships, Bedford, 1-2 August

European indoor 60m hurdles bronze medallist Serita Solomon (Michelle Bovell) was inside Daine Allahgreen’s Inter-Counties record in both heat and final of the 100m hurdles. The Blackheath and Bromley athlete clocked 12.98 (0.0) in her heat and 13.01 in the final (+1.1).

Ben Reynolds won the 110m hurdles in 13.48 (+0.8), a Northern Ireland record ahead of Commonwealth and European silver medallist William Sharman (Benke Blomkvist) who was the first English finisher, clocking 13.53 as runner-up.

There were three members of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland World Championships-bound 4 x 100m relay squad in action in the men’s 100m: Richard Kilty (self-coached), Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (Rana Reider) and James Ellington (Reider). Kilty, who will also contest the individual 100m in Beijing, won his heat in 10.35 (+0.5) and his semi-final in 10.20 (+0.6) but decided not to line up for the final. Aikines-Aryeetey won his heat in 10.38 (+1.0) and clocked 10.28 (-0.8) for second place behind Ellington (10.25) in his semi-final but also chose to scratch from the final. Sean Safo-Antwi (Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo) took the title in 10.16 (-0.4), equalling his season’s best, with Ellington a close second in 10.19, his best time of the summer.

Jodie Williams (Christine Bowmaker) continued her comeback after injury, and her preparation for the women’s 4 x 100m relay in Beijing, with two solid 200m runs, winning her heat in 23.83 (+0.1) and the final in 23.93 (wind speed not given). Fellow sprint relay squad member Louise Bloor (Toni Minichiello) won the women’s 100m final in 11.53 (+0.8).

Nigel Levine (Linford Christie) was a class act in the 400m, winning in 45.84, while former world, European and Commonwealth 400m hurdles champion Dai Greene (Blomkvist) prevailed over the one lap barriers in 50.77. Additionally, Jade Lally (Andy Neal) won the women’s discus with 56.20m.

Eberstadt Internationales Hochsprung Meeting, Eberstadt, Germany, 1-2 August

World junior high jump and heptathlon champion Morgan Lake (Eldon Lake) boosted her preparations for contesting the high jump at the World Championships in Beijing by making the top three against world class company and equalling her British junior record height of 1.94m in the process. The competition was won with a 1.96m clearance by German champion Marie-Laurence Jungfleisch.

Britain’s Olympic bronze medallist Robbie Grabarz (Fayyaz Ahmed) was just 1cm shy of his season’s best with a success at 2.27m for sixth place in the men’s event.

Memorial Rasschaert, Ninove, Belgium, 1 August

Double European outdoor medallist Andy Vernon (Nic Bideau) and European indoor 400m bronze medallist Seren Bundy-Davies (Stephen Ball) notched notable victories in Flanders on Saturday evening. Adelle Tracey (Craig Winrow) and Shona Richards (Marina Armstrong), two members of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team who narrowly missed out on medals at the European U23 Championships in Tallinn last month, also won their events.

Vernon emerged victorious over 5000m in 13:20.34, 1.77 ahead of Hayle Ibrahimov, the Azerbaijani who took European silver in between the Briton and Mo Farah over twelve and half laps at last summer’s European Championships in Zurich. In third place, Scottish cross country champion Andy Butchart (Derek Easton) clocked a lifetime best of 13:29.49, while Morpeth’s Jonathan Taylor (Gordon Surtees) also ran a PB, finishing 14th in 13:44.11.

Bundy-Davies won the women’s 400m in 51.88, finishing 2.01 clear of Germany’s Ruth Spelmeyer. Tracey, who finished fourth in the 800m at the European U23s, was a winner over two laps in 2:01.10, an improvement of 0.30 on her PB. The 22-year-old Guildford and Godalming athlete finished just 0.05 clear of Iceland’s former world youth and European junior champion Anita Hinriksdottir, with former European indoor champion Jenny Meadows (Trevor Painter) down in sixth place in 2:01.64 and Emily Dudgeon (Stuart Hogg) eighth in 2:02.28.

Richards, who also finished fourth in her event in Estonia, won the women’s 400m hurdles in 56.23. Her WSEH club mate and training partner Jacob Paul (Armstrong) was runner-up in the men’s 400m hurdles in 50.40 with Jack Houghton (Colin Bovell) placing third in 50.50. Tom Lancashire (Steve Vernon) clocked a season’s best of 3:38.07 for fourth place in the 1500m with Cameron Boyek (David Lowes) seventh in 3:39.68, a career best.

Dutch Championships, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 31 July-1 August

Competing as a guest in the Dutch national championships, held in the 1928 Olympic Stadium which will host next summer’s European Championships, Desiree Henry (Reider) clocked a season’s best of 11.33 (+0.8) to finish third in the 100m final on Friday – behind European 60m, 100m and 200m champion Dafne Schippers (11.02) and Jamile Samuel (11.29).

Henry, who won her semi-final in 11.44 (+0.9), went on to place second in the 200m final on Saturday, clocking 23.36 (-0.2) as runner up to Samuel (23.00). The Enfield and Haringey sprinter was faster in her heat, clocking 23.24 (+0.1).

Beach to Beacon 10km, Port Elizabeth, USA, 1 August

European cross country champion Gemma Steel (John Nuttall) was unable to emulate her 2014 success in Maine. The Charnwood athlete finished fourth in 32:57 as Ethiopian Wude Ayalew, 10,000m bronze medallist at the 2009 World Championships, claimed the women’s title in 31:56.
