Hustopečské Skákáni, Hustopece, Czech Republic, 13 February
Chris Baker (coach: Sharon Heveran) made a stunning world class breakthrough at the annual indoor high jump competition at Hustopece in the Czech Republic on Saturday. The 25-year-old Sale Harrier went into the event with a lifetime best, indoors or out, of 2.28m, set in 2014, the year he finished fourth in the Commonwealth Games final in Glasgow. He proceeded to elevate his lifetime best with first time clearances at 2.30m and 2.34m before negotiating 2.36m at the second attempt to temporarily share the world lead with Qatar’s world indoor champion Mutaz Essa Barshim, who cleared the same height in Malmo earlier in the day.
Baker passed 2.38m and lost the world lead and pole position in the competition to Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi, who succeeded at that height, before both men registered three failures at 2.40m, the Briton going close with his second attempt. No British jumper had gone higher indoors since 1994 and Baker now stands third on the UK all-time list indoors – behind Steve Smith (2.38m) and Dalton Grant (2.37m). He is fourth on the overall list, 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Robbie Grabarz having jumped 2.37m outdoors.
Baker also has a qualifying mark for next month’s World Indoor Championships in Portland. The British Athletics selection standard is 2.33m.

David Hemery Invitational, Allston, Massachusetts, USA, 12 February
European and Commonwealth silver medallist Lynsey Sharp (Rana Reider) claimed the Scottish indoor 800m record at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center on Friday night. Running in the annual meeting held in honour of former British Olympic 400m hurdles champion and Boston University student David Hemery, Sharp blitzed round the four laps in 2:00.30. In doing so, the Edinburgh AC athlete eclipsed the Scottish indoors record figures of 2:00.94 set by Laura Muir at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow two years ago. She also temporarily held the 2016 world lead in the event (Poland’s Joanna Jowzik clocked 2:00.12 in Torun later that night). Sharp now stands fifth on the UK all-time indoor list.

ISTAF Meeting, Berlin, Germany, 13 February
World outdoor long jump silver medallist Shara Proctor (Rana Reider) was in outstanding form in the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin on Saturday. The 27-year-old Birchfield Harrier produced leaps of 6.86m, 6.87m and 6.91m, her best mark eclipsing her four-year-old indoor PB of 6.89m and falling just 2cm shy of Katarina Johnson-Thompson’s Uk indoor record. However, Proctor’s 6.91m effort was only good enough for second place, the rapidly emerging German Alexandra Wester jumping a 6.95m world lead.
Asha Philip (Steve Fudge) clocked 7.16 (7.18 in her heat) for third place in a women’s 60m final won in a Dutch record equalling 7.00 by world 200m champion Dafne Schippers. Desiree Henry (Rana Raider) ran 7.28 for third place in her heat. European 100m champion James Dasaolu (Steve Fudge) recorded the fastest time in the men’s 60m heats, 6.58, but was disqualified for a false start in the final.
London 2012 fourth placer Lawrence Clarke (Samba-Koundy Giscard) took third place in the men’s 60m hurdles final in 7.65, matching the World Indoor Championships qualifying standard. David Omoregie (Benke Blomkvist) was sixth in 7.72.

Copernicus Cup, Torun, Poland, 12 February
Jenny Meadows (Trevor Painter) improved her season’s best to 2:01.61 with a third placed finish in a high class women’s 800m field – behind Poland’s Joanna Jowzik, who won in 2:00.12, a 2016 world lead, and former European indoor champion Nataliya Lupu of Ukraine, runner-up in 2:00.36.
European indoor 60m hurdles silver medallist Lucy Hatton (Jerzy Maciukiewicz) won her heat in 8.12 but did not start in the final. In the men’s 400m races, Jarryd Dunn (Keith Holt) was second in heat three in 46.96 with Jamie Bowie (Piotr Haczek) third in the same heat, posting 47.01. Rachel Johncock (Leon Baptiste) was fourth in the 60m recording a season best of 7.41 behind Poland’s Ewa Swoboda who set an indoor world junior record of 7.07.

IFAM Indoor, Gent, Belgium, 13 February
World Championship 800m fifth-placer Shelayna Oskan-Clarke (Jon Bigg) opened her 2016 campaign with an indoor PB of 2:02.66 as runner up to Ethiopia’s Habitam Alemu (2:02.23). David King (James Hillier) was second in the 60m hurdles final in 7.72 after earlier improving his PB to 7.66 but a tantalising 0.01 short of the qualifying standard for the World Indoor Championships.
There were three Britons in the top four in the men’s high jump, Matthew Roberts (Fuzz Caan) triumphing with 2.23m, Allan Smith (Bryan Roy) finishing equal second with 2.23m and David Smith (Fuzz Caan) fourth with 2.20m. Isobel Pooley (Fuzz Caan) finished equal fourth in the women’s high jump with 1.81m.

New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, Boston, 14 February
European 100m hurdles champion Tiffany Porter (Rana Reider) finished seventh in a loaded 60m hurdles field in 8.04. The race was won in 7.87 by 2013 world outdoor champion Brianna Rollins of the United States. Porter described her performance as “Worst meet of the season, but the next one will be better, for sure.”

Max Eaves (self coached) won the pole vault in a season’s best 5.57m, whileSebastian Rodger (Stephen King) took first place in the 400m B race in 47.10.
IPC World Championship high jump silver medallist Jonathan Broom-Edwards (Fuzz Caan) cleared a season’s best 2.09m for eighth place.

England Athletics U15 / U17 / U20 Championships, Sheffield, 13-14 February
City of Sheffield’s European junior pole vault champion Adam Hague (Trevor Fox) won the U20 pole vault at his home track with a clearance of 5.45m, breaking Luke Cutts’ championship best performance. Middlesbrough’s Charlie Myers (Chris Boundy) took silver with 5.25m.There was also a championship record and UK U15 record in the pole vault, Harrow’s Jade Spencer-Smith (Ellie Spain) clearing 3.61m.
In a high class U20 men’s 200m final, World Youth finalist Toby Harries (Jon Bigg) of Brighton Phoenix edged past Oliver Bromby (Sara MacDonald-Gray) to take the title by 0.10 in 21.26. Edinburgh AC’s Cameron Tindle (Henry Gray) finished third in 21.46, a Scottish U20 record. Bromby won the 60m in 6.73, while Imani Lansiquot (Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo) took the U20 women’s 60m in 7.33.
The U17 women’s 800m was also a high quality affair, Enfield and Haringey’s Isabelle Boffey (Douglas Stone) overhauled Hallamshire’s Tilly Simpson with 100m to go to win in 2:06.68. Simpson was second in 2:07.19 with Scot Erin Wallace (Dudley Walker) third in 2:09.70. Perth’s Ben Greenwood (Cat Tavendale) pulled away from Brighton Phoenix’s Spencer Thomas (Jon Bigg) to win the U20 men’s 800m in 1:53.63. Thomas finished second in 1:54.40.
In the U17 men’s 60m hurdles, Charnwood’s Tre Thomas (Eliska Binks) came within 0.01 of both the UK U17 record and championship best set by Jack Meredith in 2008 with a winning time of 7.90. Cheltenham’s Molly Courtney (David Warner) won the U20 women’s 60m hurdles in 8.34, a PB and joint fifth fastest on the UK all-time list alongside Sally Gunnell.
Brighton and Hove’s Amber Anning (Steve King) won the U17 women’s 300m by almost a second in 39.37. Bristol and West’s Emily Wright (Dan Cossins) leaped a Welsh record of 6.18m to win the U20 women’s long jump.
