The Importance of Risk Assessments
Risk assessment is a fundamental step in protecting everyone involved in athletics—from athletes and coaches to spectators and officials. The goal is not to eliminate every risk, but to protect people as far as is ‘reasonably practicable’ by focusing on preventing significant harm.
Written Assessments: Generic and Specific
The UKA Code of Practice provides generic templates to help get you started. However, these must not simply be copied and pasted. Every club and facility is unique; therefore, organisers must adapt these into specific written risk assessments that accurately document the hazards and controls relevant to their specific location and circumstances.
Dynamic Risk Assessments
Safety management does not end with paperwork. Licensed coaches play a vital role by using their qualified training and experience to undertake dynamic risk assessments. This involves continuously monitoring the activity and environment, making immediate, informed judgements to manage and mitigate risks as they arise during a session.
