1 April Key Date For British Athletes In 2012

29 March 2012

For athletes hoping to be selected for the London Olympic Games this summer, Sunday 1 April 2012 is an important date in their diary as it marks the start of the qualification period to achieve a current UKA “A” standard in the run up to the Aviva 2012 Trials.

From 22 – 24 June over 750 athletes will go head-to-head at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium, as they try to gain automatic nomination for selection for this summer’s Olympic Games.

The atmosphere is sure to be electric in Birmingham as only the first two eligible athletes in the final of each discipline are automatically nominated for selection provided that they fulfill the selection criteria available, which includes securing a current UKA “A” standard from 1 April, with up to three spots available overall.

Currently 27 men and 25 women have achieved the UKA “A” standard, across 13 and 12 Aviva 2012 Trials disciplines respectively.

For UKA Head Coach, Charles Van Commenee, Sunday 1 April 2012 marks the start of an important period for athletes who need to achieve a current UKA “A” standard:

“Those who still need to get a qualifying mark in order to gain selection for the London Games are from this date onward in the position to demonstrate that valuable element of current form.

“After athletes get their qualifying marks in, they can fully focus on achieving the top two positions at the Aviva 2012 Trials. It promises to be the most competitive Olympic trials in since the 1980’s.”

Following the Aviva 2012 Trials, the UKA Selection Panel will meet on Monday 2 July 2012 and select a team to nominate to the British Olympic Association (BOA).

Athletes successfully selected for Team GB will be announced on Tuesday 3 July 2012, once selection has been ratified by the BOA.

The UKA Olympic Selection Policy is available for download from the UKA website
