Over the challenging Andorran uphill course, the Great Britain & Northern Ireland team claimed two team medals at the World Mountain Running Championships.

The senior women and junior men both earned team podium places respectively, winning the silver medal.

In the senior women’s contest, Emily Collinge (club: Alta Valtellina) was the first British counter across the line in 1:07.57 for seventh place. Her previous championship pedigree was substantial, a previous European champion and world silver medallist on the up and down courses, but this was an impressive showing on the uphill race.

Sarah Tunstall (Kendal) used her championship experience to claim 10^th place and help guide the team to the second spot on the rostrum. Emma Gould (Birchfield, William Laye) was 22^nd while Bethany Hanson (Ambleside) was 51^st on her British team debut. Kenya’s Lucy Wambui Mirigi was a long-time leader and eventual winner, claiming the title in style.

For the junior men, Joseph Dugdale (Copeland) performed admirably to earn fourth place which was the performance of his young career to date. He was three minutes behind a Ugandan 1-2-3 led by Dan Chebet, crossing the line for a crucially high finish which contributed to the team silver.

The rest of the British junior quartet backed up this position with some fine displays of running. Matthew Mackay (Rossendale, Graham Wright) was not far behind for seventh place, firmly inside the top ten, while Jack White (City of Norwich, Peter Gore) was 11^th of his international debut for the British team. Meanwhile, Euan Brennan (Ilkley, Andrew Henderson) was 29^th to complete the British line-up.

Trials winner Jacob Adkin (Moorfoot, Robbie Simpson) continued his solid individual form to finish as the highest Briton in the senior men’s race. His sixth-place finish among a quality field followed up a string of fine overseas performances in recent months over the terrain. His time of 58:31 saw him follow in a Ugandan 1-2-3 led home by Robert Chemonges, on their way to team gold.

Christopher Arthur (Keswick, Mark Croasdale) was 16^th while the ever-present Andrew Douglas (Inverclyde, Sophie Dunnett) was 25^th, followed in by Max Nicholls (Tonbridge, Peter Brenchley) in 52^nd position.

The junior women’s team were eighth in the world, while Lauren Dickson (Lasswade, Linda Smith) earned a 17^th place finish. Rosie Woodhams (Kendal) was 27^th with Anna McFadyen (Forres) and Helen Thornhill (Buxton) following swiftly in 29^th and 31^st respectively.

It was another Ugandan victory in this race – both individually and in the team standings – Risper Chebet taking the honours.
