2014 European Championships And Ipc Athletics European Championships Selection Policies

6 January 2014

British Athletics has announced the selection policies for the 2014 European Championships in Zurich, Switzerland, on 12-17 August and the 2014 IPC Athletics European Championships in Swansea on 18-23 August.

The selection policy for the European Championships is in line with British Athletics’ strategic aim of winning medals at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and beyond. Therefore it is structured to select a team with the aims of medal success at the 2014 European Athletics Championships and providing an opportunity for developing athletes with the potential for future success at senior outdoor major championships.

The XX Commonwealth Games take place in Glasgow in July 2014, less than three weeks before the European Championships. Where an athlete doesn’t qualify to do so by right, the selection panel will carefully consider each athlete’s individual circumstances of the athlete wishes to compete in both Glasgow and Zurich.

The selection policy for the IPC Athletics European Championships is in line with British Athletics’ strategic aim of winning gold medals at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games and beyond. The policy is structured to select a team with the aims of medal success at the 2014 IPC Athletics European Championships and providing opportunities for developing athletes with the potential for future success at outdoor major championships.

The XX Commonwealth Games take place in Glasgow in July 2014, one month before the IPC Athletics European Championships, and the selection panel will carefully consider each athlete’s individual circumstances of the athlete wishes to compete in both Glasgow and Swansea. Athletes wishing to compete at both must submit a request to the Paralympic Head Coach prior to 1 May 2014.

Similarly, the IWAS World Juniors also takes place only a few weeks before the European Championships. Given the age and experience profile of athletes seeking selection for the Juniors it may not be considered in the best interests of young athletes to attend both the IWAS Juniors and the European Championships in the same season. As a result, any athlete selected for the IWAS World Juniors will not be selected for the IPC Athletics European Championships.
