UK Athletics have today announced the event line up that will provide athletes with the high-quality competition opportunities within the UK.

The schedule which comprises competitions organised and hosted by both UK Athletics and external partners highlights the key opportunities ahead for athletes from both the Olympic and Paralympic World Class Programmes.

It was presented last month by Major Events Director Cherry Alexander via an open web forum with athletes from both Olympic and Paralympic World Class programmes as well as those aspiring to make major championship teams in 2022.

For Olympic programme athletes and those targeting non-disabled championships, one of the key priorities identified in addition to strong competition is the ability to gain World Athletics rankings points, and today’s announcement confirms each event’s capacity to deliver.

Para athletes were given an overview of events available exclusively to them in 2022 through both a World Para Athletics (WPA) approved para-only competition pyramid, and a WPA-endorsed programme of events where Para Athletics disciplines will be integrated into Olympic programme events.

The events which demonstrate the breadth of opportunities available to athletes will be built upon further by UKA and partner organisations with an increasingly enhanced programme already in planning for 2023.

Strategic Lead for Major Events & International Relations Cherry Alexander said:

“The event landscape at World and European Level is developing at a pace and it is vital the UK not only keeps up but is seen to be offering a wide range of competitive opportunities for athletes.

“The pandemic presented a challenging backdrop however we cannot afford to not have competition opportunities for our athletes. It is more essential now than ever that we provide platforms upon which they can perform, especially with some of the challenges encountered with travel restrictions.

“This plan for 2022 though is just the first step, and this year presents a unique challenge with the unprecedented busy summer schedule. We are already looking at how we can expand this offer in 2023 ensuring we are focusing on putting athletes at the centre of the competition planning for both Paralympic, Olympic and off-track events.

“We will also aim to confirm our mega-event strategy which will highlight what championships we are hoping to host in the UK in the years to come. We have a World Class reputation for event hosting and we are determined to bring future championships to these shores for the benefit of our competing athletes and the wider athletics community.”
