2022 NI International Cross Country meeting and Dundonald Cross Challenge preview

Leg four of the British Athletics Cross Challenge takes place in Northern Ireland this Saturday. The event that is part of a World Athletics Silver Cross Country Tour and also incorporates the Celtic Games and Home Countries International.

Races will get underway from 10:55am at the Billy Neill Country Park, and athletes from the home countries will be battling it out over the undulating course against some leading international athletes such as Kenya’s Hellen Obiri,

Three of the top four athletes in the senior women’s Cross Challenge overall standings will be racing in Dundonald; Jess Gibbon (Reading), Hannah Irwin (James Thie, Cambridge and Coleridge) and Kate Avery (Shildon). All of these athletes will be representing England in the event.

Another athlete to watch out for in the senior women’s race is European Cross Country U20 champion Megan Keith (Ross Cairns, Inverness) who will be racing as part of the Scotland U23 squad.

In the senior men’s race, first and second in the overall Cross Challenge standings, Hugo Milner (Derby) and Zakariya Mahamed (Idris Hamud, Southampton), lead the entries from a domestic perspective. Milner won in Cardiff and Milton Keynes in 2021, and lines up for England among a tough field in Northern Ireland.

Jamie Crowe (Derek Easton, Central) and Stuart McCallum (Bud Baldaro, Winchester), both of whom competed for GB & NI at the European Cross Country Championships last month, will line up in Scottish vests.

Racing starts at Dundonald at 10.55am with the Senior International races from 2.15 pm. All visitors are asked to follow the COVI guidelines and check the Site Map for facility details.
