On the final day at the IWAS Championships, rain and wind made for an interesting challenge for the athletes. Brian Alldis executed a clever tactical race in the 5000m final (T54), making sure he was well positioned for the break in the final few laps. Finishing 5th, only 2 seconds behind winner Prawat Wahoram in 11.18.04, Allldis clocked his second fastest time ever.
The 4x100m wheelchair relay team of Karl Nicholson, Mickey Bushell, Brian Alldis and Richard Powell finished third behind world record holders Thailand. Looking to Beijing the team can bring in Dave Weir and continues to build as a medal threat in this event.
There were also strong 4th positions for 17 year old Andrew Martin (F40 discus) and Anne Wafula-Strike in the T53/54 400m final.
Overall it has been a good experience for both the World Class Programme athletes, who are preparing for Beijing, and a good learning experience for the younger group who will likely be GB&NI Paralympic Team members in 2012.
Main GB&NI results:
Andrew Martin – (F40) Discus – 4th 20.47m
Brian Alldis – (T54) 5000m final – 5th 11:18.09s
Anne Wafula-Strike – (T53/54) 400m Final – 4th 63.93s
4x100m relay
GB (Karl Nicholson, Mickey Bushell, Brian Alldis, Richard Powell) 3rd 60.92s
