Alex Wright Selected For Worlds

19 July 2013

British Athletics has today added a further name to the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia 10-18 August.

Alex Wright (Coach: Raphael Rinaldi) was not named in the selection earlier this week and appealed through the formal appeals process. Whilst the appeal concluded Wright was not selectable under the policy guidelines, the fact that he had secured the 20k walk ‘A’ standard with a 1:23.05 in Lugano in March, but there was not an official trial event for the discipline meant it was referred back to the Performance Director to reconsider.

Upon reconsideration it was concluded that if last week’s Sainsbury’s British Championships 5km walk in which he set a new British Record had been classed as a trial race, then his subsequent victory as well as possession of the A standard would have led to automatic selection in round one of the selection process.

Wright said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have been selected to the GB & NI team for Moscow, and would like to thank Neil Black for reconsidering the initial decision.

“I am looking forward to heading out to for the British Athletics altitude camp in Font Romeau tomorrow and I look forward to putting in my best ever performance over the 20k distance for the team next month.”

Today’s addition brings the GB & NI team size to a total of 61.
