APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR 2022 LLOYD COWAN BURSARY

Grants of up to £500 are available for coaches and unfunded athletes with potential, aged between 16 and 23, for whom cost is a barrier to accessing developmental opportunities, from the Lloyd Cowan Bursary.

The Bursary was set up in memory of Lloyd Cowan MBE, who believed that no-one with sporting potential should be held back by lack of support and opportunities.  The new application window is open from now until midnight on 13 October.  The selection process will then take place when the Grants Committee will meet to consider every submission with decisions confirmed by the end of October.

In its first year, some 60 per cent of applications were successful and included European under U18 medallists Tendai Nyabadza (Coach: Andrew Ross; Club: Harmeny) and Rebecca Grieve (Francis Smith, Pitreavie) along with Jaiden Dean (Brian Hopkins, City of Norwich AC), the 2022 English Schools champion and U17 indoor 60m hurdles British record holder.

Coaches to benefit in 2021 included Anita Richardson (Sale Harriers), who supports several upcoming athletes such as Success Eduan, who competed at the World U20 Championships this summer in Cali.

Gwennan Lewis (Swansea/Cardiff Met) a throws coach based in Wales was another to receive an award last year.

Lloyd Cowan competed internationally in sprint hurdles before becoming a very successful coach with Olympic and World champion, Christine Ohuruogu and European champion, Andy Turner amongst those to benefit from his coaching skills.  The Foundation was set up following his death in January 2021.
