ARTER BOOKS HER PLACE AT THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS AT NIGHT OF THE 10,000M PBS

Charlotte Arter (coach: Chris Jones) came a stunning third in a personal best of 32:15.71, securing her place on the Great Britain & Northern Ireland team for the European Championships.

The Cardiff athlete ran a controlled race and dictated the pace of the chasing pack, before kicking in the final kilometre, shattering her personal best in the process.

Her performance, coupled with that of fellow Brits Louise Small (Mick Woods and Jenny Nesbitt (David Walker) helped the GB&NI to a second place team medal.

After picking up third, Arter said: “The crowd was absolutely unreal to get me round and I’m really happy. I knew I was in really good shape, training and racing has been going well, this is my first race on the track this year.

“I knew I could get the time it was just a matter of how the race was going to pan out on the day. This the first stage in the race calendar so now I can get back to training and look at planning for the Europeans in August.”

Philippa Bowden (Mick Woods) came home as the second Brit in fifth, also setting a personal best of 32:33.10, and was followed home in seventh by Louise Small (Mick Woods) in 32:34.73, a lifetime best.

Small added: “I’ve had a niggle and I’ve been debating whether or not to run but it’s amazing. I didn’t realise I was the third fastest Brit until the end. I made every move to make sure I didn’t drop off and my race plan paid off.

Jenny Nesbitt (David Walker) recorded 32:38.45, Claire Duck (Mike Baxter) achieved a time of 32:52.85, and Faye Fullerton finished in 33:47.70.

In the men’s race, Alex Yee (Kenneth Pike) hit the qualifying standard of 28:20.00 as he ensured his place at the European Championships as he recorded 27:51.94 on his way to a fifth place finish.

Andy Vernon (Nic Bideau), who already had the standard heading into the event, followed him home in sixth in 27:52.32, with Chris Thompson seventh in 27:52.56.

Ben Connor (Steve Vernon), who already had the standard, came 13th in 28:31.59 with Mohamud Aadan (Paul Oppe), Luke Traynor and Sam Stabler (Rob Denmark) 16th, 28th and 32nd respectively.

Aadan recorded 28:39.79, with Traynor hitting 29:20.32 and 31:16.81 the time for Stabler. It was double delight for Great Britain as their showing earned them another silver medal in the team event.

After hitting the standard and crossing the line as first Brit, Yee said: “I’m speechless, I came in and a lot of people were speculating as to how I’d run but I put it to the back of my head.

“My preparation has been so good and I can’t complain. I’m so lucky to be part of this great event. The crowd push you on so much is unreal. I can’t believe what I’ve done.

“There’s guys who can run amazing times but it was perfect for the time I was going for. I wanted to do my selection justice and I’m over the moon.”

Vernon added: “That last lap was tough. I was reeling Alex in but it was just half a metre too far. I had Thommo on my shoulder as well so it was good that us three Brits could have a little battle. It was a shame a group of European athletes got away.

“I’m perhaps not as prepared as I could have been. A lot of the guys have been at altitude but I haven’t. But I have that preparation ahead of Europeans so I have plenty of time to get ready.”
