ASHER-SMITH AMONG FOUR BRITS IN ACTION AT FIRST DIAMOND LEAGUE OF 2022

The 2022 Wanda Diamond League season gets underway in Doha on Friday as it kickstarts the 13 meetings series.

Four British athletes will be in action in Qatar with Dina Asher-Smith (coach: John Blackie, club: Blackheath and Bromley) and Beth Dobbin (Leon Baptiste) going in the women’s 200m, Daniel Rowden in the men’s 800m, and Naomi Metzger in the women’s triple jump.

World and European champion Dina Asher-Smith headlines the 200m field, which includes Olympic medallists Shericka Jackson (JAM) and Gabrielle Thomas (USA). The Briton opened her season with a 400m [54.76] and 300m [36.41] in April but will be back to the half lap distance in Doha.

Olympian, Beth Dobbin clocked a PB of 11.46 for 100m last season, and the Edinburgh athlete will open her season over 200m.

Elsewhere, Daniel Rowden was third at the Doha meeting in 2021, and he will face a strong field in the men’s 800m. The Woodford Green Essex Ladies athlete, who holds a personal best of 1:44.09, will take on Olympic silver medallist Ferguson Cheruiyot Rotich (KEN) and reigning world champion Donavan Brazier (USA).

Out in the field, Naomi Metzger (Aston Moore, Trafford) will compete in the triple jump having opened her season with a 14.00m jump in Bermuda last month. She will take on a line-up which includes Olympic silver medallist Patricia Mamona (POR), and world and European silver medallist Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk (UKR).

Coverage of the Wanda Diamond League in Doha will be live on BBC Two between 17:00-19:00 on Friday 13 May 2022.
