ASHER-SMITH NAMED BT SPORT ACTION WOMAN OF YEAR

Dina Asher-Smith’s popularity knows no bounds after this year’s triple European champion won a public vote to claim the BT Sport Action Woman of the Year Award last night.

Asher-Smith was named as the winner by Olympic hockey champion Kate Richardson-Walsh as the great and good of female sport gathered in London for a glittering ceremony.

The BT Sport Action Woman of the Year Award is the latest in a long list of prestigious prizes won by Asher-Smith following her all-conquering 2018 on the track.

Now in its sixth year, the BT Sport Action Woman of the Year Award celebrates a host of exceptional sporting performances by British female athletes throughout 2018.

Up against double Olympic skeleton champion Lizzy Yarnold, footballers Fran Kirby and Lucy Bronze, golfer Georgia Hall, triathlete Vicky Holland, cyclist Laura Kenny and Paralympic champions Menna Fitzpatrick and Jen Kehoe, Asher-Smith came out on top in the public vote.

It is deserved recognition for a year that has seen the 23-year-old win triple European gold, two medals at the Commonwealth Games and finish as the world leader in the 100m and 200m on the track and subsequently be named women’s European Athlete of the Year and The Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year and be shortlisted for the IAAF Female Athlete of the Year, which will be announced tonight.

Asher-Smith said on the night: “It’s a bit of surprise because I know there were so many other great nominees, world champions, people who won at the Winter Olympics, so to think that I am the Action Woman of the Year is incredible. Thank you so much but there were so many other worthy women as well.”

Asher-Smith was also up for the Team of the Year award at the BT Sport ceremony as part of the British women’s 4x100m relay team with Daryll Neita, Asha Philip, Imani-Lara Lansiquot and Bianca Williams and Asher-Smith however England’s Commonwealth Games gold medal winning netball team from the Gold Coast would be successful on the night.

Elsewhere Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson received the Lifetime Achievement Award for her services to sport.
