Athletics was one of the most recognised sports at today’s awards ceremony for the 2007 Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year.

Amongst the winners at the prestigious event were Jessica Ennis (City of Sheffield) who won the University Sporting Achievement of the Year Award and Cherry Alexander, UK Athletics Head of International/Competition Management, who won the Unsung Hero category in recognition to the years of work behind the scenes of athletics in the UK.

Others short-listed for awards at the event, which took place at Lords Cricket Ground, were athletes Christine Ohuruogu (Newham & Essex Beagles) and Abby Westley (Loughborough Students).

Once again athletics features in the final stages of the BBC’s Young Sports Personality of the Year award, with World Youth 100m Gold medallist Asha Philip (Newham & Essex Beagles) selected as one of the ten short-listed athletes.

Philip, who became Great Britain’s first female winner of a global title over 100m, will hope to follow in the footsteps of Amy Spencer and Harry Aikines Aryeetey who have previously received the award.
