Aviva Gb & Ni Teams For European Cup Combined Events

09 June 2011

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Martin Brockman (coach: Christopher Bowman) and UK number one Daniel Awde (coach: Greg Richards) will lead the Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland men’s team as they bid for promotion in the European Cup Combined Events First League in Italy on 2-3 July, while Grace Clements (coach: Julie Hollman), also a bronze medallist in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, will hope to lead by example for the women in the Super League in Poland.

Brockman recorded his lifetime best points score of 7712 when finishing third in the decathlon in Delhi, but it’s Beijing Olympian Awde who has risen to prominence in recent weeks.

The 23-year-old smashed his PB to win the England Athletics Combined Events Championships in Bedford last weekend, recording 7869 points to enter the UK All-Time top ten and go to the top of the UK rankings for 2011 to date.

Also recording PBs in Bedford and making up the Aviva GB & NI men’s quartet are Ashley Bryant (coach: Ian Grant), Aviva GB&NI representative at last year’s World Junior Championships with a best of 7638, and John Lane (coach: Toni Minichiello) whose best now stands at 7348, who are currently ranked second and third respectively in the UK.

On the women’s side Clements is ranked second in the UK and is 14th on the All Time list with a best mark of 5819 when finishing third in the Commonwealth Games.

She was the best placed British finisher in the recent IAAF Combined Events Challenge Meeting in Italy and is joined by Louise Wood (coach: Julie Hollman) who recorded a lifetime best of 5556 in that event and Gemma Weetman (coach: Greg Richards), who won the England Athletics Combined Events heptathlon title in a legal (non wind-assisted) best of 5379.

Dominique Blaize – another of Julie Hollman’s strong combined events squad – makes up the quartet with a best of 5671 from 2010.
