The European Athletics Golden Track Awards nominees have been revealed, and British fans have until Friday 18 October to vote for the five candidates across three awards categories.

The men’s and women’s Rising Star and European Athletes of the Year awards winners will be presented with their prestigious Golden Tracks trophies at the annual Golden Tracks award ceremony in Tallinn, Estonia on Saturday 26 October.

There are two British nominees for the Women’s European Athlete of the Year; Dina Asher-Smith (John Blackie; Blackheath & Bromley) and Katarina Johnson-Thompson (Bertrand Valcin; Liverpool Harriers).

Asher-Smith won her first world title this month, sealing 200m gold in a national record of 21.88s.

She had won 100m silver behind Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (JAM) earlier in the week, also in a British record time (10.83s). She completed the championships with 4x100m relay silver alongside a team of Asha Philip, Ashleigh Nelson and Daryll Neita.

In September, she won the Diamond League trophy over 100m, beating Fraser-Pryce in Brussels. This followed success in the series in Doha and Stockholm earlier in the year, on both occasions over the 200m distance.

Johnson-Thompson ended the 2019 season as a world heptathlon champion and European indoor pentathlon gold medallist, the latter for the second time.

In Doha, Johnson-Thompson reached new heights, setting a British record points tally of 6981 which saw her defeat Nafi Thiam (BEL), the reigning Olympic, world and European champion. With PBs across four of the seven disciplines, it was a two-days to remember for KJT who exceeded Jessica Ennis-Hill’s points tally from when she won the Olympic title in 2012.

In March, she won the pentathlon title in Glasgow with a score of 4983 points. She now holds world outdoor and indoor, Commonwealth Games and European Indoor titles heading into the Olympic year.

After a successful 2019 season, we also have two British representatives in the women’s European Rising Star award in the form of Amy Hunt (Joe McDonnell; Charnwood) and Jemma Reekie (Andy Young; Kilbarchan).

Hunt won European U20 championships 200m and 4x100m gold during the summer which was a breakthrough moment for the 17-year-old. However, her 22.42s clocking in late June caught the attention of athletics fans around the globe as she set a world U18 and British U20 record in Mannheim.

For Reekie, she won an impressive double European under-23 gold in the 800m and 1500m and also made an impression in the senior set-up for the second consecutive year. At the European Indoor Championships on home soil, she competed in the 1500m heats and she was also selected for the IAAF World Championships for the first time, bowing out in the heats.

There is one British nominee for the Men’s European Rising Star award and that is Max Burgin (Brian Burgin; Halifax) who has run some exceptional times in recent years, and 2019 was no different. The 17-year-old posted a stunning time of 1:45.36 to improve a 33-year-old British U20 record.

It saw him lead the UK rankings for a long time and although injury prevented him from competing at the European U20 Championships, he showed his potential in that race earlier in the year.

The social media vote accounts for 25 percent of the overall vote. The media vote, Member Federation vote and the European Athletics Expert Panel vote also accounts for 25 percent of the voting process.

Voting remains open on social media until 12:00pm CET on Friday 18 October. The votes on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram will be combined in order to determine the outcome of the social media vote. The three finalists in each category will be announced shortly after on social media.
