British Contingent Set For Prefontaine Classic

30 May 2014

Shara Proctor (coach: Rana Reider) will lead the British entries as she competes on Friday night in the women’s long jump, the day before the bulk of the action at the historic Hayward Field gets underway.

Diamond League winner in 2013, Proctor is the current British record holder thanks to a 6.96 leap in 2012 and she will be looking to put in a good performance before heading back to the UK, having been in America for almost two months at the British Athletics warm weather training camp.

Also in action this evening are Jess Judd (Rob Denmark) and Jemma Simpson (Mark Rowland) who line up in separate heats of the women’s USATF 800m, a non-Diamond League event. Simpson steps down to 800m after a good run over 1500m earlier this month, whilst Judd returns to elite level competition for the first time since Moscow last year.

Similarly Mukhtar Mohammed (Jon Bigg) and Michael Rimmer (Bigg) go in the international men’s 800m this evening, which for Mohammed will be his first race of the outdoor season.

From a Great Britain & Northern Ireland point on view, Saturday’s proceedings will be kick-started by Charlie Grice (Jon Bigg) in the men’s international mile. Grice revised his 1500m personal best to 3.36.31 earlier this month and will looking to back that up over the slightly longer distance tomorrow. In the men’s 400m, Martyn Rooney (Reider) will be up against a world class field in his opening Diamond League meet of the year.

Eilish McColgan (Liz McColgan-Nuttall) will make her first outing of 2014 in a competitive women’s 3000mS/C, whilst Andrew Osagie (Craig Winrow) will look to improve on his 1.46.08 set at the opening Diamond League of the season in Doha. He lines up in a world class men’s 800m, which features the return of Olympic champion David Rudisha after a long injury lay-off.

The women’s 1500m will see both Hannah England (Bud Baldaro) and Laura Weightman (Steve Cram) in action, who like most of the British endurance athletes head to Eugene from the British Athletics altitude camp in Park City, Utah. Weightman will race on the track for the first time in 2014, with England looking to revise her 4.07.82 season’s best.

You can follow all of Saturday’s action on the BBC Red Button from 19:20-21:30, with full commentary on the British Athletics Twitter page.
